Chapter 8: The Truth Emily Buried

The room exploded with whispers.

People who had been silent moments earlier started talking over each other.

Emily looked like she had been struck.

“No.””

Her voice was barely audible.

“Michael, don’t.””

Michael smiled.

“That’s always been your favorite word.””

I stared at Emily.

I wanted to believe she had an explanation.

I needed one.

But after everything I had learned that night, trust felt fragile.

Like a piece of glass already cracked.

“Daniel,” Emily whispered.

I looked at her.

“Tell me he’s lying.””

She opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

That hesitation hurt more than anything.

Michael noticed.

“See?””

He stepped inside.

The officer immediately blocked him.

“Stay where you are.””

Michael raised his hands.

“I’m not here to fight.””

“No,” I said.

“You’re here because you know something.””

He looked at me.

“I know everything.””

Emily shook her head.

“He’s manipulating you.””

Michael laughed.

“You still do that.””

“What?””

“You still pretend you’re the victim.””

The officer looked at Emily.

“Ma’am, we need the full story.””

Emily sat down slowly.

Her strength seemed to disappear.

“I did make a mistake.””

Lily looked at her.

“Mommy?””

Emily immediately reached for her.

“No, baby. Not you.””

She looked at me.

“Never you.””

I stood there, waiting.

Six years of questions.

Six years of wondering.

Now the answers were finally coming.

“I didn’t tell you about Michael because I was ashamed.””

Emily’s voice shook.

“After I left him, I changed my name. I started over. I wanted to forget that part of my life.””

She looked at Lily.

“When I met you, Daniel, I finally felt safe.””

I swallowed.

“But you still hid it.””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“I did.””

Michael smiled.

“Because she knew you would leave.””

I looked at him.

“Stop talking.””

He ignored me.

“She knew the truth would destroy everything.””

Emily stood suddenly.

“You don’t get to talk about honesty.””

Michael’s expression darkened.

“You took my daughter.””

Emily’s face went pale.

“No.””

“You did.””

“No, I protected her.””

Michael stepped forward.

“From her father?””

“From you.””

The room went silent.

The officer watched carefully.

Michael looked at me.

“Ask her why Lily’s records were changed.””

My eyes moved to Emily.

“What records?””

Emily looked away.

I felt my stomach drop.

Another secret.

Another piece missing.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I can’t keep hearing half the truth.””

Emily cried quietly.

“When Lily was born, Michael tried to take custody.””

Michael laughed.

“Because she lied about me.””

“She told the court you were dangerous.””

“Because she wanted to erase me.””

The officer interrupted.

“Did the court issue any orders?””

Emily nodded.

“Yes.””

She reached into her bag and pulled out a document.

“The judge granted me full custody.””

Michael’s smile disappeared.

I looked at the papers.

The officer took them.

After reading them, his expression changed.

“Mr. Carter.””

Michael looked at him.

“This order states you were prohibited from contacting Ms. Bennett or the child.””

Michael’s jaw tightened.

Emily whispered:

“That’s why I ran.””

I looked at Lily.

Then at Emily.

Then at Michael.

My emotions were tangled.

Anger.

Confusion.

Pain.

Because the woman I loved had hidden something huge.

But the man standing in front of me had just admitted he wanted access to a child he had been legally kept away from.

Vanessa watched everything silently.

Too silently.

Then she spoke.

“Now you understand.””

I turned.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Everyone here has secrets.””

She walked toward the door.

“Emily hid Lily’s father.””

Michael hid his obsession.””

She pointed at herself.

“And I hid what I did.””

The room went still.

I stared at her.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa smiled sadly.

“I was the one who made sure Emily never reached you.””

Emily’s face drained.

“Vanessa…”

Vanessa continued.

“The night she escaped, I was there.””

My heart stopped.

“You were there?””

She nodded.

“I found her before she could get home.””

Emily stepped back.

“You pushed me into that car.””

The room froze.

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.””

A scream escaped from someone in the crowd.

I felt the world tilt.

“You kidnapped my wife.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I saved you from losing everything.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“You destroyed everything.””

Then the police officer’s radio suddenly crackled.

A message came through.

“Officer, we found a second room connected to the basement.””

Everyone looked toward the stairs.

The officer’s face turned serious.

“And there’s evidence someone else was kept there.””

Emily grabbed my arm.

“Daniel…”

I looked at her.

“What?””

May you like

Her voice trembled.

“Vanessa wasn’t working alone.””
