Chapter 12: The Witness In The House

Nobody spoke.

Lily stood in the middle of the room, surrounded by adults who had spent years hiding the truth from her.

And somehow…

She had been carrying the biggest secret of all.

I dropped to my knees in front of her.

“Lily.””

She looked terrified.

“It’s okay.””

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“It’s not.””

I held her hands.

“You can tell me anything.””

She looked at Emily.

Then at me.

“I was awake that night.””

Emily covered her mouth.

“What?””

Lily nodded.

“I heard Mommy and someone arguing.””

My heart started pounding.

“Where?””

“At home.””

Six years ago.

The night Emily disappeared.

I remembered that night.

I remembered Lily sleeping upstairs.

Or what I thought was sleeping.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because they told me not to.””

“Who?””

Lily looked toward Vanessa.

Then toward James.

Then she whispered:

“Uncle James.””

The room went silent.

James looked horrified.

“No.””

Lily shook her head.

“You told me if I told Daddy, Mommy would get hurt.””

James went pale.

“Lily, I never—”

“You did.””

Her voice cracked.

“You put your finger on your lips.””

She demonstrated the gesture.

“Like this.””

James stopped speaking.

Because he remembered.

I looked at my brother.

“James.””

He looked broken.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“That she would hurt Emily.””

Emily stepped back.

“You knew?””

James looked at her.

“I knew Vanessa was dangerous.””

My voice hardened.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

James had no answer.

The officer stepped forward.

“Mr. Bennett, you need to explain everything.””

James sat down.

His shoulders collapsed.

“I thought I could fix it.””

Nobody believed him.

Not anymore.

He continued.

“Vanessa contacted me months before Emily disappeared.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Months?””

“Yes.””

“She planned this for months?””

James nodded.

“She convinced me Emily was hiding something terrible.””

Emily whispered:

“She played us against each other.””

“Yes.””

James looked at me.

“She knew exactly what buttons to push.””

I thought about the fake messages.

The misunderstandings.

The arguments.

All carefully created.

But one question remained.

“Where was Emily taken?””

Everyone looked at Vanessa.

She was silent.

For the first time all night…

She looked truly afraid.

Not of the police.

Of something else.

The officer noticed.

“Ms. Reed?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“You know.””

Her eyes met mine.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

She looked at the hidden basement.

Then whispered:

“Not here.””

The officer frowned.

“Explain.””

Vanessa took a breath.

“The room under this house was only a temporary place.””

Emily’s face changed.

“Temporary?””

Vanessa nodded.

“The person who wanted Emily gone had another location.””

I felt cold.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

“I don’t know.””

Everyone froze.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

She looked down.

“I thought I was working with one person.””

James stood.

“Who?””

Vanessa’s voice dropped.

“Someone who paid me.””

The officer stepped closer.

“Name.””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then said:

“Richard Hale.””

Emily gasped.

The name from before.

The one connected to Vanessa.

But Vanessa wasn’t finished.

“There’s something else.””

She looked at me.

“Richard wasn’t trying to marry you.””

I stared.

“Then what did he want?””

Vanessa’s face turned pale.

“He wanted control of your company.””

My heart stopped.

“My company?””

Emily looked confused.

“Daniel…”

I felt something shift.

Something I had missed.

All the lies.

All the manipulation.

Maybe none of this was about love.

Maybe it was about something I owned.

The officer’s phone suddenly rang.

He answered.

Then his expression changed.

“Sir?””

A pause.

“Are you sure?””

Everyone watched him.

He slowly lowered the phone.

“We found Richard Hale.””

Vanessa looked shocked.

“Where?””

The officer looked directly at me.

“He was found dead this morning.””

Silence.

Then the officer added:

“And before he died, he left one message.””

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“What message?””

The officer looked at Lily.

“He said the only person who knows the entire truth…”

He paused.

“…is the child who saw everything.””

May you like

Lily’s face went pale.

Because she knew exactly who he meant.
