Chapter 6: The Secret In Lily’s Name

I couldn’t hear anything after Vanessa’s words.

Not the whispers from the guests.

Not the distant sound of police sirens approaching outside.

Not even Lily calling my name.

All I heard was one sentence.

“Ask Emily why she never told you who Lily’s biological father is.””

I looked at Emily.

She looked back at me.

And I knew.

There was something she had hidden.

“Daniel…”

I stepped away.

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“Not another secret.””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She looked down.

I laughed once.

A painful, empty sound.

“Six years ago?””

She flinched.

Vanessa watched us carefully.

Enjoying every second.

“You see?”” Vanessa said quietly.

“I wasn’t the only one lying.””

I turned toward her.

“You don’t get to act innocent.””

Her expression changed.

“I’m the only one who tried to protect you.””

“No.””

I pointed at the recorder.

“You destroyed lives.””

Vanessa looked away.

For the first time, she had no response.

Emily reached for my hand.

“Daniel, please.””

I looked at her.

“Tell me.””

She nodded.

Then she looked at Lily.

“I found out when I was pregnant.””

Lily watched her mother with confusion.

Emily took a shaky breath.

“Before you and I met, I was married.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“I was young. It was a terrible relationship. His name was Michael.””

Vanessa interrupted.

“There it is.””

I ignored her.

Emily continued.

“Michael was abusive. When I left him, I thought I was finally free.””

She looked at Lily.

“But then I found out I was pregnant.””

I swallowed.

“Lily…”

Emily nodded.

“Lily is Michael’s biological daughter.””

The words landed like a physical blow.

I looked at my daughter.

The little girl I had raised since the day she was born.

The girl who called me Daddy.

The girl whose first steps I recorded.

Whose nightmares I comforted.

My voice broke.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Emily cried.

“Because I was terrified.””

“Of me?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Of losing you.””

I looked away.

“You thought I wouldn’t love her?””

“I thought you deserved a choice.””

The honesty hurt.

Because I knew Emily.

She wasn’t trying to manipulate me.

She was scared.

But fear didn’t erase the lie.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“And while you were keeping that secret, I was the one who stayed.””

I looked at her.

“You stayed because you wanted what I had.””

Her face hardened.

“You think love is that simple?””

“No.””

I looked at Lily.

“I think love is raising a child every day. Not sharing DNA.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked defeated.

Then the basement door creaked.

Everyone turned.

A police officer entered.

“Daniel?””

I nodded.

“We received an emergency call.””

He looked around.

“Are you okay?””

Before I could answer, another officer walked in holding a folder.

“Sir, we found something in the room downstairs.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

He opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

An old photograph.

Of Vanessa.

Claire.

And another person.

A man.

I picked it up.

The man’s face was familiar.

Too familiar.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Who is this?””

She said nothing.

The officer answered.

“His name is Michael Carter.””

Emily’s face drained of color.

“No…”

I stared at the photo.

Michael.

Lily’s biological father.

The man Emily said she escaped from.

The man who should have been nowhere near our lives.

The officer looked at me.

“We found his fingerprints in the basement.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Then Lily whispered:

“Daddy…”

I turned to her.

She pointed at the photograph.

“I know that man.””

My heart stopped.

“From where?””

Her tiny voice trembled.

“Vanessa showed me his picture before.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

And everyone finally understood.

This wasn’t just about the past.

May you like

Michael Carter was still part of the plan.

And he was closer than any of us realized.
