Chapter 16: The Mother Who Never Left

For ten seconds, nobody spoke.

I thought I had heard everything.

A missing wife.

A hidden child.

A stolen identity.

A brother’s betrayal.

A woman who turned love into revenge.

But this was different.

This was impossible.

“My mother?””

The words barely left my mouth.

The officer looked back at the letter.

“Yes.””

I took the paper from his hand.

My father’s handwriting stared back at me.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you from the truth.

Your mother did not die.

My fingers went numb.

I stopped reading.

Emily touched my arm.

“Daniel…”

I looked at her.

“My whole life…”

My voice cracked.

“My whole life I thought she was gone.””

The officer looked serious.

“Do you know why your father would have hidden this?””

I kept reading.

The letter continued.

Your mother discovered what Richard Hale was doing. She tried to expose him. When she realized how dangerous he was, she disappeared to protect you.

A cold feeling moved through me.

Another person sacrificed everything because of Richard.

Another person erased from my life.

I continued.

I wanted to tell you. I wanted to bring her home. But the people involved were closer than I ever imagined.

The letter ended with a sentence that made everyone silent.

Trust the woman who has been searching for you.

Not the woman who says she saved you.

I looked up.

Everyone understood the meaning.

Vanessa.

Her face had changed.

For once, she looked genuinely confused.

“I didn’t know.””

I stared at her.

“You expect me to believe that?””

She shook her head.

“I knew about your father. I knew about Richard.””

She looked at the letter.

“But I didn’t know your mother was alive.””

The officer stepped closer.

“Where is Richard Hale?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Dead.””

“And your connection to him?””

She hesitated.

Then answered.

“My father worked for Thomas Bennett. When Thomas discovered Richard’s crimes, Richard destroyed my family.””

I watched her carefully.

“You blamed me.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“But you still chose to hurt innocent people.””

Her eyes filled with regret.

“I know.””

A sound came from behind us.

A quiet gasp.

Everyone turned.

James was standing near the doorway.

He looked pale.

“Daniel…”

I looked at him.

“What now?””

He swallowed.

“I know where your mother is.””

The room froze.

I walked toward him.

“You knew?””

He looked ashamed.

“I found out years ago.””

My anger exploded.

“You knew my mother was alive?””

“I didn’t know at first.””

“Then explain.””

James looked at the floor.

“After Dad died, I found documents. I found letters.””

“And you hid them.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

“Why?””

James looked at me.

“Because Richard threatened me.””

The officer stepped forward.

“What kind of threat?””

James rubbed his face.

“He said if I exposed him, everyone I loved would disappear.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So you let everyone disappear anyway.””

James closed his eyes.

“I was afraid.””

I looked away.

Fear had become the excuse everyone used.

But this time…

I saw something different.

Not manipulation.

Shame.

“Where is she?””

James looked at me.

“Your mother?””

I nodded.

He reached into his jacket.

Then pulled out an old envelope.

“She sent this.””

My heart stopped.

The envelope had my name.

Again.

Another message that never reached me.

I opened it.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then James finally found the courage to tell you.

I am sorry.

I never stopped loving you.

A tear fell onto the paper.

She continued.

I am living under another name because Richard believes I know where the evidence is.

Evidence.

I looked at James.

“What evidence?””

He shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

I kept reading.

The evidence proves who started everything.

Not Vanessa.

Not Richard.

Someone who has been controlling them both.

My breathing stopped.

Emily looked at me.

“Someone above them?””

I nodded.

The final line was written differently.

Almost like it had been added later.

Daniel, do not trust anyone until you find me.

Because the person who betrayed our family…

is still close to you.

The lights suddenly went out.

The library fell into darkness.

Then a phone rang.

Everyone froze.

It wasn’t mine.

It wasn’t the officer’s.

It was coming from inside the hidden drawer.

The officer opened it.

A second phone was inside.

The screen showed one incoming call.

May you like

The name appeared.

*Mom.*
