Chapter 1: The Padlock on the Refrigerator

I watched my stepmother throw my eleven-year-old sister’s dinner into the trash, then lock the refrigerator with a heavy metal padlock.

She thought she was teaching a little girl discipline.

She had no idea that the little girl knew exactly why she received mysterious payments from a doctor every time our father left town.

And when my sister finally revealed the truth, my father discovered that the woman sleeping beside him had been hiding something far worse than cruelty.

My name is Ethan Miller. I was twenty-two years old, and until that Thursday evening, I had convinced myself that my stepmother Monica was simply a difficult woman.

I was wrong.

Terribly wrong.

"Please, Monica. I haven't eaten since breakfast," my little sister Zora whispered.

She stood beside the kitchen island, holding a plate of mashed potatoes, chicken, and green beans. Her oversized pink sweatshirt hung loosely from her shoulders. Her cheeks looked pale, and her dark hair was tied into a messy ponytail.

Monica glanced at the plate.

Then she grabbed it.

"Didn't I tell you to finish cleaning the downstairs bathroom before dinner?""

"I did," Zora answered.

"Then why is there still water on the floor?""

"I wiped it.""

"Don't argue with me.""

Monica walked to the trash can and tipped the entire plate into it.

The chicken landed on top of a pile of discarded paper towels.

Zora stared at it.

I felt something hot rise in my chest.

"Monica, what the hell are you doing?"" I demanded.

She turned toward me, her perfectly manicured fingers resting on the kitchen counter.

"Watch your language, Ethan.""

"She's eleven.""

"And she needs to learn responsibility.""

"She's hungry.""

Monica opened the drawer beside the refrigerator and pulled out a thick metal padlock.

I watched her thread it through the refrigerator handles.

Click.

The sound was disturbingly loud.

"Chores first. Food later," she said.

Zora lowered her eyes.

I took a step toward Monica.

"Unlock it.""

She raised one eyebrow.

"Excuse me?""

"You heard me.""

Before she could answer, the front door opened.

My father, Richard Miller, walked into the kitchen carrying his briefcase. He had returned early from a business meeting, still wearing his navy suit and silver wristwatch.

He stopped when he saw the trash.

Then he noticed the padlock.

"Why is the refrigerator locked?""

Monica immediately changed her expression.

Her shoulders relaxed. Her voice softened.

"Oh, sweetheart. You're home early.""

"Monica, I asked you a question.""

"Zora has already eaten. She's been sneaking snacks all afternoon, and I finally had to establish some boundaries.""

My sister looked up.

"That's not true, Daddy.""

Monica's face tightened.

"Zora, go upstairs.""

"I haven't eaten today.""

"Enough.""

My father looked between them.

Monica sighed dramatically.

"Richard, please. I've been dealing with her attitude all day. She refuses to finish her chores, lies about everything, and then expects to be rewarded.""

I couldn't take another second.

"She fainted at school yesterday.""

The kitchen went silent.

My father slowly turned toward me.

"What?""

"Her teacher called me because you were at that conference in Chicago. Zora collapsed during recess. The school nurse said she was weak and hadn't eaten properly.""

My father's briefcase slipped from his hand.

He looked at Zora.

"Is that true, sweetheart?""

Zora nodded.

"I didn't want to bother you.""

My father crouched in front of her.

"How long has this been happening?""

She glanced at Monica.

That single glance told him more than any explanation could.

Monica folded her arms.

"This is ridiculous. She's exaggerating.""

My father stood.

"Give me the key.""

"I don't have to explain my household rules to you.""

"Monica. The key.""

She reached into her pocket but didn't hand it over.

Instead, she stepped toward him.

"Richard, you're making a scene over nothing.""

My father reached into his jacket and pulled out a small pair of metal cutters he kept in his car key pouch.

I had never seen him look so angry.

He placed the cutters around the padlock.

Snap.

The metal broke.

He pulled open the refrigerator and took out a container of leftover pasta.

"Zora, sit down.""

Monica's face turned red.

"You're undermining me in my own home!""

"Our home," he replied.

She grabbed her purse.

"Fine. If you want to treat me like a criminal, I'll leave.""

She hurried toward the front door.

But just as she reached it, Zora spoke.

"Her secret doctor pays her whenever you leave!""

Monica stopped.

Her purse slipped from her hand.

It hit the hardwood floor, spilling lipstick, keys, a wallet, and a sealed envelope.

Several hundred-dollar bills slid across the floor.

My father stared at the money.

Then he looked at Monica.

"What doctor?""

Nobody answered.

Zora stepped closer to me and gripped my hand.

"The doctor who comes when you're gone, Daddy.""

My father's expression changed.

"What do you mean, sweetheart?""

Zora swallowed.

"He comes to the house. Monica tells him you're traveling, and he gives her money.""

Monica rushed to collect the envelope.

But my father stepped between her and the scattered bills.

"Don't touch anything.""

She froze.

And then Zora whispered something that made my father look as though the floor had disappeared beneath his feet.

"He doesn't come to see Monica.""

May you like

She pointed toward the staircase.

"He comes to see me.""
