Chapter 3: The Lie That Built A Marriage
I don’t remember ending the call.
I only remember staring at Vanessa.
She looked smaller than she had minutes earlier.
Not innocent.
Not shocked.
Cornered.
The entire room waited for me to speak.
But I couldn’t.
My brain was trying to connect six years of memories with a truth that felt impossible.
Vanessa had sat beside me during police interviews.
She had brought meals to my house.
She had helped Lily with homework.
She had told me, “Emily wouldn’t want you to stay alone forever.””
Now I wondered how many times she had smiled while knowing exactly where my wife was.
“Daniel,” Vanessa said softly.
I looked at her.
“Who was that man?””
Her lips parted.
“No one.””
“No one knew Emily was alive.””
She didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Unless they knew because they were involved.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You’re going to believe her?””
She pointed at Emily.
“The woman who disappeared and left you alone?””
Emily lowered her eyes.
That hurt more than anger would have.
Because I could see the pain.
She wasn’t defending herself.
She was remembering.
I turned to Emily.
“Tell me everything.””
Emily held Lily’s hand.
“I tried to tell you.””
Her voice shook.
“The night I disappeared, I found documents hidden in Vanessa’s office.””
Vanessa laughed.
A fake laugh.
“You expect him to believe that?””
Emily continued.
“Documents about money transfers.””
I frowned.
“What money transfers?””
Emily looked at me.
“Between Vanessa and someone named Richard Hale.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But Vanessa reacted.
Her face changed.
Just like before.
A tiny crack in the mask.
“Don’t say his name.””
The words came out quietly.
Everyone heard them.
I stared at her.
“Who is Richard Hale?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Emily did.
“He was Vanessa’s business partner.””
“Was?””
Emily nodded.
“He knew about everything.””
I looked around the room.
Guests who had come to celebrate my engagement were now watching my life collapse.
I didn’t care.
I needed answers.
“What happened that night?””
Emily took a shaky breath.
“I went to Vanessa’s office because I suspected she was hiding something. I found the documents. I confronted her.””
She looked at Vanessa.
“She admitted she wanted you.””
My stomach turned.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That’s not true.””
Emily continued.
“She told me you were finally happy again. She said you would never choose me if you knew the truth.””
Lily squeezed Emily’s hand.
“What truth?””
Emily looked at our daughter.
Then at me.
“The truth that Vanessa had been creating problems in our marriage for months before I disappeared.””
I remembered.
The arguments.
The strange messages.
The sudden misunderstandings.
At the time, I thought Emily was becoming distant.
I thought grief had changed her.
But maybe…
Someone had been pushing us apart.
Vanessa suddenly moved toward the stairs.
I blocked her.
“Where are you going?””
“Daniel, I’m leaving.””
“No.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You can’t keep me here.””
“I’m not keeping you here.””
I pointed toward the door.
“I’m asking you why my wife was locked underground.””
Vanessa stared at me.
Then she whispered:
“You really think Emily is telling you everything?””
The question bothered me.
Because it sounded like a threat.
Not a defense.
“What are you hiding?””
For the first time that night, Vanessa looked angry.
Not scared.
Angry.
“You want the truth?””
She stepped closer.
“Fine.””
Emily immediately said:
“Don’t listen to her.””
But Vanessa kept going.
“Your wife didn’t disappear because of me.””
She looked directly into my eyes.
“She disappeared because of what she did.””
The room froze.
I felt Lily’s hand tighten around mine.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa smiled slightly.
A smile that made my skin crawl.
“She never told you about the night your daughter was born, did she?””
Emily’s face went pale.
I looked at my wife.
“What does Lily’s birth have to do with this?””
Emily whispered:
“Daniel…”
Vanessa reached into her purse.
This time, she didn’t look afraid.
She looked prepared.
She pulled out an old envelope.
Then she placed it on the table.
“There’s something you need to see before you decide who the villain is.””
I stared at the envelope.
My name was written across the front.
In Emily’s handwriting.
But Emily had never given it to me.
And as I reached for it, Vanessa said one sentence that made my blood run cold.
May you like
“Your wife was hiding a secret from you long before I ever entered your life.””
