Chapter 14: The Father’s Hidden File
The evidence was found inside an old storage room beneath the estate.
A room nobody knew existed.
A room hidden behind the same walls that had kept Emily trapped.
The officer handed me a small wooden box.
“Your father’s name was on it.””
My hands went cold.
My father, Thomas Bennett, had been gone for a decade.
He had been a respected businessman.
A man everyone described as honest.
A man who taught me one rule.
Family comes first.
Now I was holding a box that suggested he had secrets.
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
And a journal.
Emily stood beside me.
“Daniel…”
I looked at her.
“I don’t know what’s real anymore.””
She touched my hand.
“But we’ll find out.””
I opened the journal.
The handwriting was my father’s.
The first page was dated three months before he died.
I read:
I made a mistake trusting the wrong people.
My heart started racing.
The next line said:
Richard Hale knows too much. Vanessa knows too much. I fear they will come after my family.
I looked up.
“Vanessa knew my father?””
Vanessa looked away.
The officer turned toward her.
“Explain.””
She didn’t.
Not immediately.
Then she whispered:
“Yes.””
My anger returned.
“How?””
She looked exhausted.
“Your father hired my company years ago.””
“For what?””
“Security.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Security?””
The same people who destroyed my family?
Vanessa nodded.
“He discovered Richard was stealing from him.””
Emily looked at the journal.
“So this started before Lily was born.””
“Yes.””
I turned the page.
The next entry made my blood freeze.
Richard is not acting alone.
There is someone in my family helping him.
I stopped reading.
Everyone saw my expression.
“What?”” Emily asked.
I slowly turned the journal around.
James stepped closer.
“No.””
The officer took the page.
His eyes narrowed.
“Does your father name this person?””
I searched the next pages.
But several pages had been ripped out.
Someone had removed them.
“Missing.””
Vanessa whispered:
“They knew someone would find this.””
I looked at her.
“You?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Then who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily spoke quietly.
“Grandpa had a secret room.””
Everyone looked at her.
“What did you say?””
She looked nervous.
“Grandpa showed me once.””
Emily knelt beside her.
“Sweetheart, when?””
“Before he died.””
I felt confused.
“Lily, you were a baby.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“I wasn’t talking about Grandpa Thomas.””
The room went silent.
“Who were you talking about?””
She pointed toward the journal.
“Grandpa’s friend.””
A terrible thought entered my mind.
“Who?””
Lily whispered:
“Richard.””
Everyone froze.
Emily grabbed my arm.
“How would you know Richard?””
Lily looked scared.
“He came to our house.””
The officer moved closer.
“When?””
Lily looked down.
“After Mommy disappeared.””
My breathing stopped.
“Lily…”
“He told me Mommy was gone because she didn’t love us anymore.””
Emily broke down.
“No…”
I held Lily.
“What else did he say?””
She squeezed her eyes shut.
“He said Daddy would be happier with Vanessa.””
The room went completely silent.
Because suddenly everything connected.
The timing.
The lies.
The manipulation.
Richard wasn’t just controlling Vanessa.
He had been shaping my life.
The officer looked at me.
“Mr. Bennett, we need to know something.””
“What?””
“Did Richard Hale have access to your family home?””
I stared at the journal.
At the missing pages.
At Lily.
Then I remembered something.
A detail I had ignored for years.
The night Emily disappeared…
Someone had left a note on our kitchen table.
A note I thought was from Emily.
A note that said:
I’m sorry, Daniel. I can’t do this anymore.
But now I remembered the handwriting.
It wasn’t Emily’s.
The officer asked:
“Who had keys to your house?””
I looked up.
Only one person came to mind.
May you like
My father.
And his keys were never found after he died.
