Chapter 5: The Woman Nobody Knew

Nobody moved.

The voice came again.

Closer this time.

“You took everything from me.””

A woman appeared at the top of the staircase.

She looked nothing like the person I expected.

I had imagined someone terrifying.

Someone obviously dangerous.

Instead, I saw a woman with tired eyes and trembling hands.

But there was something about her expression that frightened me.

She wasn’t angry.

She was broken.

Vanessa stared at her.

“Claire.””

The woman smiled.

A sad smile.

“So you remember my name.””

Lily pressed against Emily.

I stepped in front of them.

“Who are you?””

Claire looked at me.

For a moment, her face softened.

“You’re Daniel.””

I didn’t answer.

“How do you know me?””

She walked down one step.

“Because Vanessa talked about you every day.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Don’t listen to her.””

Claire laughed quietly.

“That’s what you always say.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Were you two working together?””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Claire looked at her.

“Really?””

The single word carried years of anger.

I turned back to Claire.

“Tell me the truth.””

She looked at Emily.

Then at Lily.

Then back at me.

“The truth is that Vanessa promised me everything.””

Vanessa’s voice sharpened.

“Claire, stop.””

But Claire continued.

“She told me Daniel would leave Emily if he knew the truth.””

My jaw tightened.

“What truth?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“She told me Lily was supposed to be mine.””

The room went silent.

I felt Emily grab my arm.

“No.””

Claire nodded.

“She convinced me that Emily ruined my life.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“You manipulated her.””

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” I said.

“I understand perfectly.””

But Vanessa wasn’t looking at me.

She was looking at Claire.

Like she was afraid of her.

Claire stepped closer.

“She used my grief.””

Her voice cracked.

“She used my pain because she needed someone who would do anything.””

Emily whispered:

“Claire…”

Claire looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology shocked me.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Then why?””

Claire looked down.

“Because Vanessa lied.””

The room went quiet again.

I looked at Vanessa.

She finally lost control.

“Enough!””

Her voice echoed through the ballroom.

“You’re all acting like I’m the monster here.””

She pointed at Emily.

“She hid things.””

Then at Claire.

“She’s unstable.””

Then at me.

“And you?””

Her expression changed.

“You were never going to choose Emily again.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

Vanessa’s breathing became faster.

“I spent years helping you rebuild your life.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You inserted yourself into it.””

Her face tightened.

That hit something.

A truth she didn’t want to hear.

Emily reached into her pocket.

“Daniel.””

She handed me something.

A small recorder.

My heart sank.

“What is this?””

“I found it before Vanessa locked me away.””

Vanessa went completely still.

“What did you say?””

Emily pressed the button.

At first, there was only static.

Then Vanessa’s voice filled the room.

“You don’t understand, Claire. Daniel is easier to control when he thinks he has lost everything.””

My blood turned cold.

The recording continued.

“He needs someone to save him. Someone he trusts.””

Claire’s voice appeared.

“But what if he finds out?””

Vanessa answered:

“He won’t.””

I looked at Vanessa.

The woman I almost married.

The woman who stood beside me while pretending to love my daughter.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“You don’t know the whole story.””

I stepped forward.

“What else is there?””

She looked at Lily.

And for the first time, I saw real fear.

“Ask Emily why she never told you who Lily’s biological father is.””

Emily went pale.

My heart stopped.

May you like

Because Vanessa wasn’t smiling.

She was telling the truth.
