Chapter 18: The Father’s Confession

Nobody moved.

My father stood in the doorway like he had simply returned from a business trip.

Like he hadn’t been dead for ten years.

Like he hadn’t shattered every memory I had of him.

“Dad?””

The word came out before I could stop it.

Thomas smiled.

A small, tired smile.

“You got older.””

I stared at him.

“You died.””

He looked down.

“I needed everyone to believe that.””

The officer stepped forward.

“Sir, you need to step away.””

My father ignored him.

His eyes stayed on me.

“I never wanted this.””

I laughed.

The sound was empty.

“You never wanted this?””

I pointed around the room.

“My wife was kidnapped.””

“My daughter was manipulated.””

“My brother was destroyed.””

“And you never wanted this?””

His face tightened.

“I was trying to protect the family.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone says that.””

Emily stood beside me.

“Daniel.””

I looked at her.

She whispered:

“Don’t let him control the conversation.””

She was right.

My father had always been good with words.

A businessman.

A negotiator.

A person who could make anything sound reasonable.

“Why did you disappear?””

Thomas sighed.

“Because I discovered Richard was betraying me.””

The officer looked confused.

“But your wife said Richard worked for you.””

“He did.””

Thomas looked toward the files.

“But he became ambitious.””

“And my mother?””

His expression changed.

“That was different.””

“Why?””

“Because your mother wanted justice.””

The answer shocked me.

“She was telling the truth.””

Thomas didn’t respond.

That was enough.

I stepped closer.

“You let me believe she was dead.””

His eyes softened.

“I thought it was the only way.””

“You thought?””

My voice broke.

“You took my mother from me.””

“I saved you.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You saved yourself.””

For the first time, my father looked hurt.

Then he said something I never expected.

“You’re right.””

The room went silent.

He looked at the floor.

“I made mistakes.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You destroyed all of us.””

Thomas looked at her.

“You were never supposed to be involved.””

Her face changed.

“What?””

“You were a distraction.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“A distraction?””

Thomas nodded.

“Richard used you.””

I looked between them.

“So you knew everything?””

Thomas looked at me.

“I knew enough.””

“Did you know Emily was trapped?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

Emily closed her eyes.

The answer broke something inside me.

“You knew?””

Thomas looked away.

“I thought Richard would scare her into silence.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You left her there.””

“I was trying to recover the evidence.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You chose evidence over people.””

Thomas didn’t deny it.

The officer moved closer.

“Mr. Bennett, you are under investigation for—”

Suddenly, Thomas smiled.

Not sadly.

Not nervously.

Confidently.

That scared me.

“You think this ends with me?””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

Thomas looked at Lily.

“Richard wasn’t the only person who knew.””

Emily stepped forward.

“Don’t look at her.””

Thomas ignored her.

“The evidence is inside this family.””

My heart sank.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at James.

Then at Vanessa.

Then finally at me.

“It means one person here still knows where the original files are.””

The officer frowned.

“Who?””

Thomas smiled.

Then the library door behind him closed.

Locked.

A second later, the lights went out.

And from the darkness, a voice whispered:

“I do.””

It wasn’t Thomas.

It wasn’t James.

It wasn’t Vanessa.

It was a woman’s voice.

A voice I had never heard before.

Then the woman stepped into the light.

And everyone in the room recognized her.

May you like

Because she was holding the original evidence.

And she was wearing my mother’s wedding ring.
