Chapter 7: The Man From The Photograph
The photograph slipped from my fingers.
For a moment, nobody moved.
The officer picked it up from the floor and placed it back inside the folder.
But I couldn’t look away from the image burned into my mind.
Michael Carter.
The man Emily had spent years running from.
The man whose name had never been spoken in my house.
The man Lily recognized.
I turned slowly toward my daughter.
“Lily, what do you mean Vanessa showed you his picture?””
Lily looked at Vanessa.
Then she looked at Emily.
Her small face twisted with confusion.
“I didn’t know who he was.””
She hugged herself.
“She showed me a picture last year.””
My chest tightened.
“Where?””
“In the kitchen.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Daniel, she’s confused.””
I looked at her.
“Stop saying that.””
My voice echoed through the ballroom.
Everyone went quiet.
“Every time something happens, you say Lily is confused.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“Because she is a child.””
“She’s my child.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
And Vanessa knew exactly what they meant.
She wasn’t Lily’s mother.
Emily was.
Vanessa looked away.
Lily continued.
“She told me he was someone who wanted to take me away.””
Emily’s face went pale.
“What?””
Lily nodded.
“She said my real dad was dangerous.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“So you knew about Michael.””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
The police officer stepped forward.
“Ms. Reed, we need you to explain your connection to Michael Carter.””
Vanessa laughed quietly.
A strange, empty laugh.
“You all think you understand.””
“No,” I said.
“We know you lied.””
Her eyes moved toward me.
Something in her expression changed.
The mask was gone.
“Daniel, you really think Emily is innocent?””
I didn’t respond.
She stepped closer.
“You think she told you everything because she cried?””
Emily stood beside me.
“Don’t listen to her.””
Vanessa ignored her.
“She never told you that Michael was still contacting her after Lily was born.””
I looked at Emily.
“Is that true?””
Emily closed her eyes.
For a second, she looked exhausted.
Then she nodded.
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
Emily looked toward Lily.
“Of him finding her.””
The officer opened the folder again.
“We need more details.””
Emily sat down.
Her hands trembled.
“Michael wasn’t just abusive. He was controlling. After I left, he found ways to contact me.””
She swallowed.
“He said he knew where we lived.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought I could handle it.””
“You thought you could handle someone threatening our family alone?””
She looked down.
“I was wrong.””
The silence that followed felt heavier than anger.
Because I understood fear.
But I also understood what secrets could do.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“And that’s why I helped.””
Everyone looked at her.
“You helped?”” I asked.
She nodded.
“I knew about Michael.””
Emily stared at her.
“How?””
Vanessa smiled slightly.
“Because I was the one who found him.””
A chill went through me.
“What?””
Vanessa walked toward the center of the room.
“I discovered Emily’s past before you did.””
“Why?””
“Because I wanted to understand who she really was.””
“No.””
Emily shook her head.
“You were looking for a weakness.””
Vanessa didn’t deny it.
She simply looked at me.
“I found one.””
The officer stepped between them.
“Ms. Reed, did you have contact with Michael Carter?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Only for a moment.
But everyone saw.
“Yes.””
Emily whispered:
“You brought him back.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“I didn’t bring him back.””
Her voice lowered.
“He came because he wanted something.””
“What?””
Vanessa looked at Lily.
My entire body went cold.
“What did he want?””
Before Vanessa could answer, the ballroom doors opened.
A man stood outside.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
Emily gasped.
“Michael.””
Lily grabbed my hand.
The man looked directly at her.
Then smiled.
“Hello, sweetheart.””
I stepped in front of my daughter.
“You’re not coming near her.””
Michael tilted his head.
“After everything I lost, you think you can keep my daughter from me?””
Emily moved behind me.
“Daniel, don’t let him manipulate you.””
Michael looked past me.
At Vanessa.
And smiled.
“You didn’t tell him the best part, did you?””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“What are you doing here?””
Michael laughed.
“I came to finish what you started.””
Then he looked at me.
“Because the truth is…”
He paused.
“Vanessa didn’t make Lily disappear from your life.””
May you like
He pointed at Emily.
“She did.””
