Chapter 15: The Last Key

The key was found hidden inside the wooden box.

A small brass key.

Old.

Rusty.

But unmistakable.

The officer placed it on the table.

“Your father kept this?””

I nodded.

“I’ve never seen it before.””

James stared at it.

Then whispered:

“I have.””

Everyone looked at him.

“When?””

James looked uncomfortable.

“Years ago.””

My anger returned.

“Of course you have.””

He closed his eyes.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You knew about the key.””

“I didn’t know what it opened.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I forgot.””

I stared at him.

“You forgot a secret key belonging to our dead father?””

James had no answer.

The officer took the key.

“We need to find what this opens.””

The estate manager approached slowly.

“There is one place.””

Everyone turned.

“What place?””

He looked toward the oldest part of the mansion.

“The original library.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

“Because your father owned this property before selling it.””

I frowned.

“I thought this estate belonged to the Hawthorne family.””

The manager shook his head.

“No.””

A pause.

“Your father owned it first.””

The revelation hit me.

This wasn’t random.

This place was connected to my family.

To everything.

We followed him through the mansion.

The old library was covered in dust.

The key opened a hidden drawer behind a bookshelf.

Inside was a file.

Only one file.

My name was written on it.

Daniel Bennett.

I opened it.

The first document was my birth certificate.

The second was a photograph.

A photograph of my father.

Richard Hale.

And a third person.

A woman.

I recognized her immediately.

Vanessa.

But she looked younger.

The three of them were standing together.

Like friends.

Like partners.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew my father your entire life.””

She didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

My voice dropped.

“Why?””

She looked at the photo.

“Because your father was the reason I met Richard.””

The officer looked confused.

“Explain.””

Vanessa sat down.

“My father worked for Thomas Bennett.””

“Your father?””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“Your father destroyed my family.””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“What?””

She laughed softly.

“You thought this started because I loved you?””

Her eyes filled with pain.

“It started because I hated you.””

Emily stepped closer.

“Vanessa…”

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I spent years trying to make Daniel understand what it felt like to lose everything.””

My blood ran cold.

“So this was revenge.””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“But then something changed.””

“What?””

Her voice broke.

“I actually fell in love with you.””

Nobody spoke.

I couldn’t tell if I believed her.

The officer opened the file.

Inside was one final document.

A letter.

From my father.

The officer read it aloud.

“If you are reading this, then the truth has finally caught up with our family.””

My hands trembled.

The letter continued.

“Daniel, I need you to know something. The person you trust most may not be the person who betrayed you.””

Everyone looked around.

Then the final sentence appeared.

“My biggest mistake was believing my own son was innocent.””

The room went silent.

James stepped backward.

“No.””

I looked at my brother.

The officer slowly turned the page.

Because underneath my father’s signature was one more line.

A name.

Not James.

Not Vanessa.

Not Richard.

Someone else.

Someone I never expected.

The officer read it.

“Thomas Bennett’s final note mentions…”

He stopped.

May you like

His face changed.

“Daniel, it says your mother was still alive.””
