Chapter 1: The Door Behind The Party

“Your mother didn’t leave you, Lily… she was taken from us.””

I heard those words from my eight-year-old daughter in the middle of my engagement party, and within ten seconds, the woman I planned to marry became a stranger standing in a room full of witnesses.

For years, I believed the hardest thing I would ever survive was losing my wife.

I was wrong.

The hardest thing was discovering that I had been grieving someone who might have been alive all along.

The ballroom of the Hawthorne Estate was glowing with golden lights and expensive decorations. Crystal glasses clinked. Old friends laughed. Vanessa stood beside me in a white dress, holding my arm as everyone celebrated our future together.

It was supposed to be the happiest night of my life.

After six years of raising Lily alone, after years of unanswered questions and empty bedrooms, I thought I had finally found peace.

Vanessa had been there when Lily cried herself to sleep. She had held my hand through the painful anniversaries. She had told me she understood what it meant to lose someone.

But now I know she wasn’t comforting me.

She was watching me.

Waiting.

The first strange thing happened when Lily disappeared from the party.

I noticed because Lily never left my side during big gatherings. She was shy around strangers, and she always held onto my hand when too many people surrounded her.

“Have you seen Lily?”” I asked Vanessa.

She smiled calmly.

“She’s probably hiding somewhere because she’s upset about the attention.””

That answer bothered me.

“Upset? Why would she be upset?””

Vanessa shrugged and adjusted the diamond necklace around her neck.

“Daniel, children are unpredictable.””

Then came the sound.

Three slow knocks.

Everyone turned.

The noise came from the far end of the ballroom, where an old wooden door stood against the stone wall.

A door I had never seen opened.

A door that, according to the estate manager, had been locked for years.

The room went silent.

Then Lily appeared.

Her hair was messy. Her cheeks were covered in tears.

“Daddy!””

She ran toward me, but she wasn’t looking at me.

She was looking at the door.

My heart tightened.

“Lily, what happened?””

She grabbed my hand with both of hers.

“Mommy is inside.””

The entire room froze.

I stared at her.

“What did you say?””

Lily pointed at the locked door.

“Mommy is inside. She’s been calling for help.””

A nervous laugh escaped from someone near the bar.

People thought it was a child’s imagination.

I wanted to believe that too.

Because the alternative was impossible.

My wife, Emily, disappeared six years ago.

The police searched for months. Her phone was found abandoned. Her car was discovered near an old highway.

There were no witnesses. No answers.

Eventually, everyone told me the same thing.

Emily left.

She chose to walk away.

But Lily never believed that.

Vanessa stepped forward quickly.

“Lily, honey, stop making up stories.””

Her voice sounded sweet, but something about her expression was different.

Cold.

“Your mother left a long time ago.””

Lily shook her head violently.

“No, she didn’t!””

Vanessa reached for her.

“Come here.””

Lily pulled away.

Then she said something that changed everything.

“You hid her so you could marry my dad!””

A wave of whispers moved through the room.

Vanessa’s smile disappeared for half a second.

Then she recovered.

“Oh my goodness,” she said, looking around at the guests.

“Daniel, I’m sorry. She’s confused. She’s been struggling with losing Emily.””

I stepped forward.

“What is going on?””

Vanessa immediately moved between me and Lily.

“She found the door and created a fantasy.””

“A fantasy?””

“Yes,” Vanessa said quickly.

“Children do these things.””

Then the knocking came again.

Three slow knocks.

This time, nobody laughed.

The sound was real.

Heavy.

Weak.

Like someone was using the last bit of strength they had left.

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only for a moment.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Her hand moved toward her purse.

“What’s in there?”” I asked.

She froze.

“What?””

“Your purse. Why are you reaching for it?””

“I’m not.””

But she was.

Before I could say anything else, Lily ran toward a large painting hanging beside the door.

She reached behind the frame and pulled something out.

An old brass key.

My blood went cold.

“How did you get that?””

Lily placed it in my hand.

“Mommy told me where she hid it.””

Vanessa took a step back.

“No.””

The word escaped her lips before she could stop herself.

I looked at her.

“No?””

She forced a smile.

“I mean… Daniel, this is ridiculous.””

But Lily grabbed my shirt.

“Daddy, please.””

Her voice cracked.

“Please open it.””

I walked toward the door.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

Vanessa followed.

“Daniel, don’t.””

I turned.

“Why?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was when I knew.

Something was wrong.

I slid the key into the lock.

The click echoed through the ballroom.

Everyone held their breath.

My fingers wrapped around the cold brass handle.

Then, from the darkness behind the door, a weak voice whispered my name.

“Daniel…”

My entire body went numb.

Because I knew that voice.

A voice I had spent six years trying to forget.

“Don’t let Vanessa see what’s inside.””

Vanessa went completely pale.

May you like

And behind me, someone whispered the question everyone was thinking.

“Is Emily alive?””
