Chapter 4: The Letter She Never Sent

The envelope felt heavier than paper should.

I stared at my name written across the front, recognizing the curve of Emily’s handwriting immediately.

I had seen that handwriting on grocery lists, birthday cards, notes left beside my coffee cup.

I had seen it on the last anniversary card she ever gave me.

But this was different.

This letter had never reached me.

“Daniel,” Emily whispered.

I looked at her.

There was fear in her eyes.

Not the fear of being exposed.

The fear of losing me.

“What is this?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Open it.””

Her voice was calm again.

Too calm.

Like she had been waiting years for this moment.

I broke the seal.

Inside was a single sheet of paper folded twice.

The ballroom around me disappeared.

The guests.

The music.

The decorations.

Everything faded as I read the first line.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then something has happened and I wasn’t able to explain everything myself.

My hands started shaking.

Emily looked down.

“You wrote this?””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t I get it?””

Her eyes moved toward Vanessa.

That answer was enough.

I kept reading.

I’m sorry I kept secrets from you. I thought I was protecting our family. I thought I could fix everything before you ever had to know.

I stopped.

“Protecting us from what?””

Emily looked away.

Vanessa stepped closer.

I ignored her.

My eyes moved down the page.

I found out that Lily’s birth records were changed after she was born. Someone removed important information. Someone wanted us to believe a different story.

My heart stopped.

I looked at Lily.

She was sitting beside Emily, confused and scared.

“What does this mean?””

Emily reached for her.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice came out harder than I intended.

“I need the truth.””

The room went silent.

Emily nodded.

“You deserve that.””

She took a deep breath.

“When Lily was born, there was another woman at the hospital.””

“Who?””

Emily looked at Vanessa.

“Her sister.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What?””

Emily continued.

“Vanessa’s younger sister, Claire.””

I frowned.

“I don’t know anyone named Claire.””

“You were never supposed to.””

Vanessa laughed.

A sharp, humorless sound.

“You’re unbelievable.””

Emily stood slowly.

“You know exactly who she is.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Don’t do this.””

“Why?”” Emily asked.

“Because Daniel might finally understand?””

I looked between them.

“Someone explain.””

Emily’s voice softened.

“Claire was pregnant at the same time as me. She lost her baby two days before Lily was born.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that have to do with Lily?””

Emily looked at our daughter.

“When Lily was born, Claire became obsessed. She believed someone had stolen her chance to be a mother.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“And you knew?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That silence was louder than any confession.

Emily continued.

“Claire disappeared after that. Vanessa told me she had moved away.””

“But she hadn’t?””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

A cold feeling spread through my chest.

“Where was she?””

Emily looked toward the basement door.

“I found out years later.””

I stepped closer.

“Where?””

Emily swallowed.

“She was in this house.””

Everyone gasped.

Vanessa suddenly moved.

“Enough.””

Her voice cut through the room.

“This is insane.””

She pointed at Emily.

“You were always good at twisting things.””

Emily flinched.

And I noticed something.

Vanessa wasn’t denying the details.

She was attacking Emily.

There was a difference.

I looked at the letter again.

The final lines were smudged.

Like tears had fallen on the paper.

I read the last sentence.

Daniel, if Vanessa tells you I abandoned you, don’t believe her. I tried to come home.

I looked up.

“You tried?””

Emily nodded.

“She found me before I could reach you.””

“Who?””

Emily’s voice became barely audible.

“Claire.””

The lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone turned.

A second later, the ballroom doors slammed shut.

The sound echoed.

Vanessa looked toward the entrance.

Then she whispered something I never expected to hear.

“She’s here.””

May you like

And from somewhere upstairs, a woman’s voice answered.

“Finally.””
