Chapter 2: The Woman In The Dark

I didn’t open the door immediately.

For one impossible second, I just stood there with my hand on the handle, afraid that reality would break apart if I turned it.

My mind searched for another explanation.

Someone was playing a cruel joke.

Someone had found an old recording.

Someone had a voice similar to Emily’s.

Anything.

Anything except the truth.

Because if Emily was behind that door, then six years of my life had been built on a lie.

“Daniel,” Vanessa said quietly.

Her voice was different now.

Not sweet.

Not gentle.

Desperate.

“Step away from the door.””

I looked back at her.

The woman who had held me while I cried over my missing wife.

The woman who told me she wanted to help me heal.

The woman who was now terrified of a locked room.

“Why?”” I asked.

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because you don’t know what’s behind it.””

I tightened my grip on the handle.

“I heard my wife.””

Her eyes flickered.

That tiny movement was enough.

I turned the handle.

The old lock resisted at first, then gave way with a sharp crack.

The door opened slowly.

A wave of cold air rushed into the ballroom.

Behind it was a narrow staircase descending into darkness.

Everyone gasped.

The estate manager stepped forward.

“I thought that room was sealed.””

Vanessa immediately snapped.

“Everyone needs to leave.””

Nobody moved.

She raised her voice.

“This is private family business!””

I looked at her.

“Family?””

The word sounded strange coming from her mouth.

Lily grabbed my hand.

“Daddy, Mommy is down there.””

I took my phone from my pocket and turned on the flashlight.

Then I walked down.

Each step creaked beneath my feet.

The air smelled like dust and damp wood.

At the bottom was a small room.

A room that looked forgotten.

There was an old chair.

A broken table.

A blanket on the floor.

And on the wall…

Scratches.

Hundreds of scratches.

My stomach twisted.

Someone had been trapped here.

Behind me, Vanessa whispered.

“Daniel, stop.””

I turned.

She was standing at the top of the stairs.

Her face was full of panic.

“How long have you known about this room?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

That was her mistake.

I moved closer to the corner of the room.

Then I heard it.

A soft cough.

“Emily?””

The room went silent.

A figure moved behind an old wooden divider.

Slowly.

Weakly.

A woman stepped forward.

Her hair was shorter.

Her face was thinner.

But I knew her.

I knew her before my mind could accept it.

“Daniel…”

My knees nearly gave out.

“Emily?””

She reached toward me.

I caught her before she fell.

For a moment, I forgot about everything else.

The party.

The guests.

Vanessa.

The lies.

I was holding my wife.

The woman everyone told me had abandoned us.

The woman I buried in my heart.

Emily held onto my jacket and cried.

“I thought I’d never see you again.””

I couldn’t speak.

I just held her.

Then Lily came running down the stairs.

“Mommy!””

Emily looked up.

Her entire face broke.

“My baby…”

Lily collapsed into her arms.

And for the first time in six years, my daughter heard her mother say the words she had been waiting for.

“I never left you.””

I looked toward Vanessa.

She was still standing above us.

Watching.

And she wasn’t crying.

She wasn’t shocked.

She was calculating.

That scared me more.

I helped Emily sit down.

“Tell me what happened.””

Emily looked at Vanessa.

Fear returned to her eyes.

“She knew you would come here.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

Emily grabbed my hand.

“Daniel, you have to listen carefully.””

Vanessa took a step backward.

“I don’t know what she’s talking about.””

Emily ignored her.

“She didn’t save me after the accident.””

Accident.

The word hit me.

“What accident?””

Emily closed her eyes.

“The night I disappeared, I discovered something about Vanessa.””

Vanessa’s voice became sharp.

“Stop lying.””

Emily flinched.

I noticed.

And that made my blood boil.

“What did you discover?””

Emily looked directly at me.

“She was never trying to help you move on.””

The room became painfully quiet.

“She was trying to erase me.””

A noise came from upstairs.

A phone vibrating.

Everyone looked up.

Vanessa slowly reached into her purse.

But before she could answer, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke immediately.

“Daniel, if Emily is alive, you need to know the truth about the night she disappeared.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“How do you know about that?””

The man paused.

May you like

Then he said:

“Because I was the person who helped Vanessa hide her.””
