Chapter 11: The Secret Before Lily
I wanted to scream.
I wanted someone to finally tell me the whole truth without another hidden piece appearing.
But everyone kept handing me fragments.
A letter.
A photograph.
A recording.
A confession.
My life had become a puzzle where every missing piece was another betrayal.
“Emily.””
She looked at me.
I didn’t raise my voice.
I didn’t accuse her.
I just asked.
“What happened before Lily was born?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
James watched from across the room.
Waiting.
Emily looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“I was twenty-two.””
The room quieted.
“I met Michael when I was young. At first, he wasn’t cruel.””
She swallowed.
“He was charming.””
I knew that story.
Many people did.
Monsters rarely introduce themselves as monsters.
“They change slowly,” Emily continued.
“One day, you wake up and realize you don’t recognize your own life.””
Lily moved closer to her.
Emily touched her hair.
“When I found out I was pregnant, I thought things would change.””
“They didn’t.””
She shook her head.
“Michael became worse.””
I looked at James.
Then back at her.
“Why did you hide all this from me?””
“Because I was ashamed.””
“You shouldn’t have been.””
She looked at me.
“But I was.””
The honesty hurt.
But it also sounded like Emily.
Not a liar.
A person carrying pain.
James interrupted.
“That’s not the whole story.””
I turned sharply.
“James.””
He looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
The words sounded strange from him.
“I should have told you years ago.””
“Then do it now.””
James took a deep breath.
“Before Emily met you, Michael was involved in illegal business.””
Emily closed her eyes.
“I didn’t know at first.””
James nodded.
“She found out later.””
“What kind of business?””
James hesitated.
“Fraud. Money laundering.””
The officer listening nearby wrote something down.
I looked at Emily.
“Did you know?””
She shook her head.
“Not until after I was pregnant.””
James continued.
“When she tried to leave, Michael threatened her.””
“He threatened Lily.””
“Yes.””
I felt anger rising.
“Then why did you help him?””
James looked down.
“I didn’t.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
James looked at me.
“I never helped Michael.””
“Then why were you in the video?””
His face tightened.
“Because Vanessa called me.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa, standing nearby with an officer, looked away.
I turned.
“You called him?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
James continued.
“She told me Emily had disappeared because she wanted to leave Daniel.””
Emily shook her head.
“She lied.””
“Yes.””
James nodded.
“And I believed her.””
I stared at him.
“You believed her?””
James looked ashamed.
“I saw how broken you were. I thought Emily had abandoned you.””
My voice became cold.
“So you helped Vanessa.””
“I thought I was helping you.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You helped someone who kidnapped my wife.””
James closed his eyes.
“I know.””
The admission hurt.
Because he wasn’t defending himself.
He knew.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“James wasn’t the only one who believed me.””
Everyone looked at her.
She smiled sadly.
“I was very convincing.””
The officer moved toward her.
“Ms. Reed, you need to stop talking.””
But Vanessa ignored him.
She looked at me.
“You want the final truth?””
I didn’t answer.
She continued.
“Emily wasn’t the only person I trapped.””
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked toward the stairs.
“The basement wasn’t built for Emily.””
Nobody moved.
“It was built years before.””
She looked at Lily.
“And there was someone else.””
Emily grabbed my arm.
“Daniel…”
The officer frowned.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa smiled.
“I’m saying the person who started this was never me.””
The lights suddenly flickered.
Again.
Then every phone in the room buzzed at the same time.
A message appeared.
Unknown Number.
I looked down.
My blood froze.
Because the message contained only one sentence.
*You’re looking for the wrong person.*
Then another message appeared.
*Ask your daughter what she saw the night Mommy disappeared.*
I looked at Lily.
Her face had gone completely white.
“Lily?””
She started crying.
“I didn’t want to tell you.””
My heart stopped.
“Tell me what?””
May you like
She whispered:
“I saw who took Mommy.””
