Chapter 9: The Person Behind Everything
The next morning, I woke up before sunrise.
I hadn’t slept.
Not really.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Vanessa standing across the street.
Watching my house.
Watching my life.
Watching me without my knowledge.
I placed a hand over my stomach.
My daughter moved gently.
That small movement reminded me that I had something more important than revenge.
I had to protect her.
When I walked into the kitchen, Marcus was already there.
He looked exhausted.
The man who used to leave for work in a pressed shirt and perfect hair now looked like someone who had aged years overnight.
He looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I poured water into a glass.
“For what part?””
He looked down.
“All of it.””
I wanted to forgive him.
A small part of me still loved him.
But love didn’t erase pain.
“You need to understand something, Marcus.””
He nodded.
“I do.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t.””
He stayed quiet.
“You keep losing people and acting surprised.””
His expression changed.
“You lost me when you chose Vanessa.””
He swallowed.
“I know.””
“You lost my trust before anyone found out about your father.””
“I know.””
“You don’t get to become the victim now just because someone lied to you too.””
His eyes filled.
“I know.””
This time, I believed him.
Because for once, he didn’t defend himself.
A knock came at the door.
Marcus immediately stood.
After everything that happened, even a simple knock felt dangerous.
Daniel entered.
He looked at both of us.
“We need to talk.””
Marcus crossed his arms.
“About what?””
“About the message.””
Vanessa was behind him.
She looked different.
Smaller.
Broken.
Daniel placed a folder on the table.
“I found out who sent it.””
Marcus opened it.
Inside were printed emails.
Photos.
Records.
His face changed as he looked through them.
“What is this?””
Daniel answered quietly.
“Evidence.””
“Of what?””
“That Vanessa wasn’t the only person watching you.””
My heart dropped.
Marcus looked up.
“Who else?””
Daniel pointed at one of the photos.
A person stood outside our house.
Not Vanessa.
Someone older.
Someone familiar.
Marcus stared.
Then whispered:
“No.””
I looked at the picture.
And recognized him.
The man smiling beside Marcus at family gatherings.
The man who always called him “son.””
The man everyone trusted.
Marcus’s uncle.
Daniel continued.
“He knew Vanessa was investigating me.””
Marcus’s hands tightened.
“Why?””
“Because he knew if Vanessa found the document, she would expose him.””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“So he used me.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at her.
“For what?””
“To get close to you.””
The room went silent.
Then Marcus asked:
“Wait.””
His face changed.
“Then the baby…”
Vanessa looked away.
Everyone understood.
Marcus’s voice became quiet.
“The pregnancy was part of his plan too?””
Vanessa started crying.
“No.””
But nobody believed her immediately.
She looked at me.
“I swear.””
I watched her carefully.
For the first time, I didn’t see my enemy.
I saw someone who had been manipulated too.
But that didn’t erase what she did.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“What did my uncle want?””
Daniel opened the folder.
“He wanted the document.””
“And where is it?””
Daniel looked at him.
“I hid it somewhere only you could find.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
Daniel reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small key.
Then placed it on the table.
“I left a clue before I disappeared.””
Marcus stared at the key.
“Where does it go?””
Daniel looked at him.
“To the one place you never thought to search.””
The room went silent.
Then Daniel said:
“Your childhood home.””
Marcus froze.
Because that house had been abandoned for fifteen years.
May you like
And inside it…
was the secret that started everything.
