Chapter 6: The Family Nobody Knew
The word stayed in the room like a curse.
Half-sister.
Nobody moved.
Nobody knew what to say.
Marcus looked at Vanessa like he was seeing a stranger for the first time.
Maybe because he was.
Everything he thought he knew about her had disappeared.
“You knew?””
His voice was directed at Vanessa.
She wiped her tears.
“No.””
“Don’t lie to me.””
“I swear.””
“You expect me to believe anything you say?””
She flinched.
And for once, I didn’t feel anger toward her.
I felt something else.
Confusion.
Because the woman who had destroyed my marriage was now standing in the middle of a family disaster even bigger than ours.
Marcus’s father sat down slowly.
“My name is Daniel.””
Nobody answered.
He looked at Marcus.
“I should have told you years ago.””
Marcus laughed.
“Years ago?””
He looked around the room.
“You mean before I married my wife?””
Daniel looked at me.
Guilt crossed his face.
“Yes.””
“Before I built a family?””
“Yes.””
“Before Vanessa came into my life?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
Marcus turned away.
I could see him fighting himself.
Part of him wanted answers.
Part of him wanted everyone to disappear.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“You should never have gotten involved with him.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I didn’t know.””
“When did you find out?””
She stayed quiet.
Daniel’s face changed.
“When?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Three months ago.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Three months?””
She nodded.
The room became colder.
I knew exactly what that meant.
Three months ago was when Vanessa appeared.
Three months ago was when Marcus started changing.
Three months ago was when my husband began coming home late.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You found out who he was…”
My voice shook.
“And then you started a relationship with him?””
She looked ashamed.
“I was angry.””
“That’s your excuse?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I wanted someone to blame.””
The honesty surprised me.
She continued.
“I hated him for abandoning my mother.””
She looked at Daniel.
“I hated him for pretending we didn’t exist.””
Then she looked at Marcus.
“But when I met Marcus, I didn’t know.””
Marcus stared.
“You’re saying everything just happened?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
A tear fell.
“Everything after I found out was wrong.””
The confession was quiet.
But it carried more weight than any lie.
Daniel stood.
“This is my fault.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Yes.””
He accepted it.
“I made choices that hurt everyone.””
I looked at Marcus.
The man who had betrayed me.
The man who had been betrayed.
For the first time, I understood something painful.
Two people could be wrong at the same time.
Marcus walked toward the window.
Outside, the street was dark.
Quiet.
Normal.
Like the world had not just shattered.
Then his phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
Marcus picked it up.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
He opened it.
His face changed.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
He handed me the phone.
There was only one sentence.
*“You think you know the truth about Vanessa. You don’t know what she did before she met you.””*
My stomach tightened.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Who sent this?””
Daniel’s face turned serious.
“I don’t know.””
Another message arrived.
This time with a photo attached.
Marcus opened it.
And the color drained from his face.
Because the picture showed Vanessa…
standing outside our house months before we had ever met her.
Watching us.
Watching me.
May you like
And beneath the photo was a date.
A date that proved Vanessa had known about Aaliyah long before she ever entered Marcus’s life.
