Chapter 11: The Man Behind the Smile
The footsteps slowly came down the stairs.
One step.
Then another.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then he appeared.
Marcus’s uncle.
Richard.
The same man who had hugged him at family gatherings.
The same man who brought gifts for holidays.
The same man who told everyone he was proud of Marcus.
Now he stood in the house holding a gun.
Not pointed at us.
Not yet.
But close enough.
Marcus stared at him.
“Uncle Richard.””
Richard smiled sadly.
“I was hoping you’d never find this place.””
Marcus looked at the weapon.
“Did you follow us?””
Richard didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You’ve always been good at hiding.””
Richard laughed.
“And you’ve always been good at running.””
The anger in Daniel’s face was immediate.
“You destroyed my family.””
Richard tilted his head.
“No.””
He looked at Marcus.
“You did.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
Richard walked into the room.
“You want to know why your father disappeared?””
Daniel said sharply:
“Don’t.””
Richard ignored him.
“Because your father chose a secret over his own family.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Is that true?””
Daniel looked away.
That hurt more than any answer.
Richard smiled.
“See?””
He pointed toward Daniel.
“He still can’t tell you everything.””
Marcus’s hands tightened.
“Why did you do this?””
Richard looked at the documents on the table.
“Because your father found something that could destroy me.””
“The money?””
“The evidence.””
Richard walked closer.
“Your father was going to expose people.””
“Who?””
Richard smiled.
“People with power.””
The answer was vague.
Too vague.
Marcus noticed.
“You’re still lying.””
Richard’s smile faded.
“What?””
“You came here because you’re afraid.””
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
Marcus continued.
“If you already won, you wouldn’t need to threaten us.””
For a second, Richard looked impressed.
Then angry.
“You sound like your father.””
Daniel moved slightly.
“You leave him out of this.””
Richard laughed.
“You still think you’re protecting him.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Protecting who?””
Richard looked at Daniel.
“Tell him.””
Daniel said nothing.
Richard stepped closer.
“Tell him why you really left.””
The silence was unbearable.
Marcus looked at his father.
“Why?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Because I was afraid.””
Marcus waited.
“I received a threat.””
“What kind?””
“They told me if I didn’t disappear, they would hurt you.””
Marcus froze.
Richard smiled.
“There it is.””
Daniel continued.
“I thought leaving would keep you safe.””
Marcus’s voice cracked.
“You let me hate you to protect me?””
“Yes.””
“You let me think you abandoned us?””
“Yes.””
Marcus turned away.
The pain on his face was worse than anger.
Richard watched.
“You see? Your father always chooses secrets.””
Then he looked at me.
“And now you married into the same kind of family.””
My expression hardened.
“Don’t talk about my marriage.””
Richard smiled.
“Your marriage was already broken before I ever arrived.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What did you do?””
Richard’s smile returned.
And that scared me.
“Nothing.””
He looked toward Vanessa.
“She did.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa went pale.
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What does he mean?””
Richard laughed softly.
“Ask her why she really chose you.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Richard looked at Marcus.
“Ask her about the night before she first met you.””
Marcus stared.
“What happened that night?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Marcus’s expression changed.
“Vanessa.””
She whispered:
“I can explain.””
Richard smiled.
“Of course you can.””
He looked at Marcus.
“Everyone has a story.””
Then he pointed toward the documents.
“But the truth is in that box.””
Marcus grabbed the papers.
Richard stepped backward.
“Read them.””
Daniel shouted:
“Marcus, don’t!””
But it was too late.
Marcus opened the first document.
His eyes moved quickly.
Then stopped.
His face drained.
I walked toward him.
“What is it?””
He looked at me.
And whispered:
“Aaliyah…”
His hands shook.
“This isn’t about Vanessa.””
I looked at the paper.
“What does it say?””
Marcus swallowed.
May you like
Then he said:
“It’s about our baby.””
