Chapter 2: The Secret Evelyn Kept

The silence after Evelyn’s words felt heavier than any argument I had ever heard.

Marcus stood in the middle of the living room, staring at Vanessa like he was waiting for her to laugh and tell him it was a cruel joke.

But she didn’t.

She couldn’t.

Because Evelyn wasn’t joking.

Vanessa’s face had lost all color.

“Mom,” Marcus said slowly.

“What are you talking about?””

Evelyn didn’t look at him.

She kept her eyes on Vanessa.

“You know exactly what I’m talking about.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I don’t know why you’re doing this.””

Evelyn gave a bitter laugh.

“After everything you’ve done, you still think you can lie your way out?””

I stood there, holding my stomach, trying to understand how my entire life had changed in less than an hour.

A few days ago, I was planning baby names with my husband.

Now I was watching him discover that the woman he cheated with had possibly lied about everything.

Marcus looked between them.

“Someone explain.””

No one answered.

His voice became louder.

“Explain!””

Vanessa suddenly turned toward him.

“Marcus, don’t listen to her.””

He looked at her.

“Then tell me she’s wrong.””

Vanessa froze.

That was the answer.

Marcus saw it too.

His face fell.

“You can’t.””

She stepped closer.

“It’s complicated.””

“No,” he said.

“It’s not.””

His hands shook.

“You told me you were pregnant with my baby.””

Vanessa looked away.

I watched the pain cross his face.

It was strange.

A part of me wanted to feel satisfied.

He had broken me.

He had humiliated me.

He had chosen another woman while I carried his child.

But seeing him hurt didn’t make me happy.

It just made me realize how much damage had been done.

Evelyn walked toward the kitchen table and picked up a small envelope.

“I found this two weeks ago.””

Marcus looked at it.

“What is that?””

“A letter.””

“From who?””

Evelyn handed it to him.

“From the doctor’s office.””

Vanessa suddenly moved.

“Don’t!””

Everyone looked at her.

Marcus slowly opened the envelope.

His eyes scanned the paper.

Then his expression changed.

“What is this?””

Vanessa said nothing.

He looked at her.

“What is this?””

Her lips trembled.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She stayed silent.

“After the baby was born? After I signed my name on the birth certificate?””

“Marcus…”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“No, I want an answer.””

I had never seen him like that before.

Not angry.

Broken.

Evelyn crossed her arms.

“The appointment records showed inconsistencies.””

Marcus looked confused.

“What inconsistencies?””

Evelyn glanced at me.

Then back at him.

“The timing.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What timing?””

Nobody answered.

That scared me more than anything.

I looked at Evelyn.

“Please.””

She softened.

“Aaliyah, I’m sorry you were dragged into this.””

Marcus looked at his mother.

“Dragged into what?””

Evelyn hesitated.

Then she said:

“Vanessa wasn’t hiding because she loved you.””

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“Stop.””

“She was hiding because she needed you.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Needed me for what?””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?”” Marcus repeated.

“Yes.””

“A mistake is forgetting an appointment. A mistake is losing your keys.””

His voice shook.

“You lied about a baby.””

The room fell quiet again.

I looked at Vanessa.

For weeks, she had been inside my house.

She had touched my things.

She had slept with my husband.

And now I realized she had been playing a game I didn’t even understand.

I whispered:

“Who is the father?””

Vanessa looked at me.

For a second, there was something almost like regret in her eyes.

Then it disappeared.

“I can’t tell you.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You can’t?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Why?””

Because she didn’t answer, Marcus stepped closer.

“Why can’t you tell me?””

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward Evelyn.

And that tiny movement told me everything.

This wasn’t just between Marcus and Vanessa.

Evelyn knew something.

Something she had kept hidden.

Marcus noticed too.

“What is going on?””

Evelyn looked exhausted.

“I was hoping I would never have to say this.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“Say what?””

Evelyn looked at me.

Then at her son.

“When Vanessa came into your life, she already knew something about our family.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

Evelyn’s voice dropped.

“She knew about the secret your father left behind before he died.””

Marcus froze.

“My father?””

I felt a chill run through me.

Marcus had always told me his father died when he was young.

He never talked about him.

Never.

Evelyn reached into her purse and pulled out another piece of paper.

“I found this hidden among your father’s old belongings.””

Marcus took it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

And the anger on his face turned into something else.

Fear.

“What does my father have to do with you?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

My heart raced.

Because whatever was written on that paper…

had just changed the entire story.

Then Marcus turned the page over.

And the name written at the bottom made him whisper one word:

“Impossible.””
