Chapter 18: The Child of a Stranger

Nobody moved.

The room felt frozen.

Marcus stared at Evelyn.

Like he was waiting for her to laugh.

To say it was another cruel misunderstanding.

But she didn’t.

She cried.

And that was worse.

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Evelyn reached toward him.

He stepped back.

“I don’t understand.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You don’t get to say sorry.””

Evelyn looked down.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She wiped her tears.

“Of losing you.””

Marcus laughed softly.

“My whole life was built on a lie.””

“I loved you.””

“That doesn’t change the truth.””

I watched him break.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Quietly.

Like a person whose foundation had disappeared.

Daniel stood nearby.

He looked devastated.

“Evelyn…”

She looked at him.

“I never wanted this.””

Daniel whispered:

“Who was he?””

Marcus turned.

“Who was who?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“The man who is your biological father.””

Nobody spoke.

Then she answered.

“His name was Gabriel.””

Marcus frowned.

“I’ve never heard of him.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because I erased him from your life.””

The honesty was brutal.

Marcus looked sick.

“Why?””

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“Because Daniel raised you.””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“I always knew there was a possibility.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You knew?””

Daniel nodded.

“I found out years ago.””

“And you still called me your son?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Because you are my son.””

Marcus looked away.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

Daniel accepted the pain.

“I know.””

The room was quiet.

Then I noticed something.

Vanessa was crying.

Not for herself.

For Marcus.

Because now she understood what it felt like.

To discover your entire identity was built on missing pieces.

Marcus sat down.

“I don’t know who I am.””

I moved closer.

But stopped.

Because I didn’t know if he wanted comfort.

After everything, I didn’t know anything anymore.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

Marcus answered.

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Marcus.””

He went still.

“Who is this?””

The woman laughed softly.

“You don’t recognize your own family?””

His face changed.

“Clara?””

“No.””

A pause.

Then:

“I’m the person your mother spent years trying to hide.””

Marcus stood.

“Gabriel?””

Silence.

Then the voice answered:

“Yes.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus gripped the phone.

“My father?””

“No.””

The word was quiet.

But devastating.

“I’m not your father.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Then who are you?””

The woman on the phone spoke again.

“I’m Gabriel’s daughter.””

My heart stopped.

Marcus looked at everyone.

A new family member.

Another secret.

Another person connected to his past.

“Why are you calling me?””

The woman took a breath.

“Because Clara is lying to you.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“About what?””

“Everything.””

The room became silent.

She continued.

“Your mother didn’t hide Gabriel because she was ashamed.””

“Then why?””

“Because Gabriel discovered something.””

“What?””

The woman’s voice dropped.

“The real reason your father disappeared.””

Marcus looked toward Daniel.

Everyone was listening.

The woman whispered:

“Your father didn’t run away.””

A pause.

“He was murdered.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

Marcus closed his eyes.

“And who killed him?””

The woman answered:

“The person you have been trusting your entire life.””

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

Because suddenly, one terrifying possibility remained.

The person who destroyed his family…

May you like

was still inside it.

Would you like Chapter 19 to reveal who killed Marcus’s father, or focus first on the identity of Gabriel’s daughter?
