Chapter 16: The Woman at the Window

The photo was still on Marcus’s phone.

A picture of me.

Outside our house.

Taken that morning.

I remembered that moment.

I remembered standing on the porch, waiting for Marcus to bring the car around.

I remembered feeling tired.

Confused.

Lost.

But I never noticed anyone watching me.

That was the part that frightened me most.

Not that Clara was nearby.

That she had been close enough to see me.

Close enough to take a picture.

Close enough to know exactly where I was.

Marcus immediately grabbed his jacket.

“I’m going home.””

Daniel stood.

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

“My wife is there.””

“And that’s exactly why you cannot go alone.””

The words stopped him.

Because for once, Daniel wasn’t acting like a man hiding secrets.

He was acting like a father.

Marcus looked away.

“I don’t know who to trust anymore.””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone in that room understood.

Trust had been destroyed piece by piece.

I looked at Vanessa.

She sat quietly in the corner.

The woman who had once walked into my home like she owned it.

Now she looked like someone who had lost everything.

I didn’t forgive her.

Not yet.

Maybe not ever.

But I understood something.

She wasn’t the biggest threat anymore.

Richard had manipulated her.

Clara had manipulated Richard.

And somewhere above all of us was a person who had been controlling the game from the beginning.

Evelyn stood.

“I know where Clara might be.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus frowned.

“You do?””

She nodded.

“There was one place your father never wanted me to go.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Yes.””

“What place?””

She took a deep breath.

“The old family property.””

Marcus stared.

“The one near the lake?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Clara always went there.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“You think she’ll still be there?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“She always returns to the places where she feels powerful.””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“She likes control.””

Marcus picked up his keys.

“Then we find her.””

I reached for his arm.

“Marcus.””

He looked at me.

I saw the fear in his eyes.

Not for himself.

For me.

“I’m not letting anyone else decide what happens to us.””

The words were simple.

But they meant something.

Because for the first time in weeks, Marcus wasn’t choosing Vanessa.

He wasn’t choosing secrets.

He was choosing us.

We drove to the lake property just before sunset.

The entire ride was silent.

Nobody knew what waited ahead.

The old house appeared through the trees.

It was larger than Marcus’s childhood home.

Beautiful.

Expensive.

But empty.

Like a place built to impress strangers.

Not hold a family.

Daniel opened the gate.

The lock was broken.

“That’s not good,” he said.

Marcus looked at him.

“What?””

“Someone has been here recently.””

We entered slowly.

The inside was untouched.

Too untouched.

No dust.

No abandoned feeling.

Someone was maintaining the place.

Then Marcus stopped.

On the wall was a photograph.

A family portrait.

Daniel.

Clara.

Richard.

And another person.

A young woman.

Vanessa looked at it.

Her face changed.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

She stepped closer.

“That’s my mother.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked shocked.

“I thought…”

Vanessa touched the photograph.

“She was working with them.””

I looked at Daniel.

“You didn’t know?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

Then a voice came from upstairs.

“You really were always terrible at noticing betrayal, Daniel.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus whispered:

“Clara.””

A woman slowly appeared at the top of the staircase.

Older than the picture.

But with the same cold eyes.

Clara smiled.

“Hello, nephew.””

Marcus stared.

The woman who had destroyed his family was finally standing in front of him.

“You watched us.””

Clara smiled.

“I watched all of you.””

“Why?””

She walked down the stairs.

“Because I needed to know who would find the truth.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“And Vanessa?””

Clara looked at her.

“She was useful.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“You used me.””

Clara laughed.

“You were angry and easy to control.””

The words hurt Vanessa.

But Clara didn’t care.

Marcus’s fists clenched.

“You ruined my family.””

Clara tilted her head.

“No.””

She smiled.

“Your family was already ruined.””

Then she looked at me.

“And now I need the last piece.””

My heart tightened.

“What piece?””

Clara’s eyes moved to my stomach.

May you like

The room went cold.

“The baby.””
