Chapter 13: The Woman Who Was Sent
The room felt smaller with every truth that came out.
Too many secrets.
Too many lies.
Too many people making decisions about my life without me.
I looked at Vanessa.
The woman who had entered my home.
The woman who had smiled while destroying my marriage.
The woman I thought was my enemy.
Now she looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
“Who sent you?”” Marcus asked.
Vanessa didn’t answer.
His voice hardened.
“Who sent you?””
She looked at Richard.
That single glance changed everything.
Marcus turned slowly.
“Uncle Richard.””
Richard smiled.
“You’re finally understanding.””
My stomach tightened.
Marcus stepped toward him.
“You sent her.””
Richard didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
The word landed harder than a confession.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Marcus looked at her.
“You knew?””
She shook her head quickly.
“Not at first.””
“Then when?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“After I found the files.””
“What files?””
She looked at Richard.
“The ones about your father.””
Richard’s expression darkened.
“Careful.””
Vanessa flinched.
And I noticed something.
She was afraid of him.
Not the way someone fears being exposed.
The way someone fears a person who has power over them.
Marcus noticed too.
“You threatened her.””
Richard laughed.
“I guided her.””
“No.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You used her.””
Richard shrugged.
“Everyone uses everyone.””
I felt anger rise inside me.
“Is that what you tell yourself?””
Richard looked at me.
I didn’t care that he was dangerous.
I didn’t care that he had controlled everyone around him.
I was tired of being afraid.
“You ruined people’s lives and call it strategy.””
Richard looked amused.
“You’re brave.””
“No.””
I looked at my husband.
“I’m tired.””
The room became quiet.
Because that was the truth.
I wasn’t fighting because I wasn’t hurt.
I was fighting because I was done being hurt.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Tell me everything.””
She looked down.
“I was supposed to get close to you.””
“For what?””
“To find out if you had the document.””
Marcus’s face tightened.
“And the affair?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“That wasn’t part of the plan.””
A bitter laugh escaped him.
“Really?””
“No.””
She looked at him.
“I made that choice.””
At least she admitted it.
“I started caring about you.””
Marcus looked away.
“Don’t.””
“I know.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“Don’t tell me you cared about me after everything.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel stepped forward.
“Why the pregnancy?””
Vanessa froze.
The question hung in the air.
Marcus looked at her.
“Answer.””
She whispered:
“Because Richard needed a reason for me to stay close.””
I felt cold.
“He wanted you emotionally attached.””
Vanessa nodded.
“He thought if I became part of your family, you would trust me.””
Marcus stared.
“And the baby?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“I was pregnant.””
Everyone froze.
Marcus’s face changed.
“But…”
She interrupted.
“Not with your baby.””
The silence was unbearable.
“My child’s father was someone else.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Then why tell me it was mine?””
Vanessa cried.
“Because Richard told me I had no choice.””
Richard’s expression remained calm.
“He’s lying.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“You threatened my mother.””
Richard’s smile disappeared.
The room changed.
Daniel moved closer.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“She knew too much.””
Daniel’s face went pale.
“My God.””
Marcus looked between them.
“What happened to her?””
Vanessa whispered:
“She disappeared.””
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood.
Richard had been removing obstacles for years.
Daniel’s voice was low.
“You destroyed everyone who got close to the truth.””
Richard smiled coldly.
“And yet here we are.””
Then he reached into his coat.
Everyone froze.
Marcus moved instantly.
But Richard wasn’t reaching for a weapon.
He pulled out a small envelope.
And placed it on the table.
“This is why you’re all wrong.””
Marcus stared.
“What is that?””
Richard looked at him.
“The real reason your father disappeared.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Don’t open it.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Why?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Richard smiled.
“Because your father didn’t leave to protect you.””
May you like
He looked directly at Marcus.
“He left because he was protecting himself.””
