Chapter 5: The Truth Behind the Affair

Nobody slept that night.

Not because we were waiting for answers.

Because we were afraid of them.

The house that once felt like my safest place now felt like a room full of strangers.

The crib was still in the corner.

The baby clothes were still folded.

But everything had changed.

I sat at the kitchen table while Marcus paced back and forth.

For the first time in months, he wasn’t looking at his phone.

He wasn’t texting Vanessa.

He wasn’t making excuses.

He was searching for answers.

And somehow, that made me feel even worse.

Because I realized how much of my marriage had been built on lies.

Marcus stopped walking.

“Aaliyah.””

I looked up.

“I owe you an apology.””

I almost smiled.

Almost.

“An apology?””

He nodded.

“I know it’s not enough.””

“No, it isn’t.””

He looked down.

“I hurt you.””

“You destroyed my trust.””

“I know.””

“No, Marcus.””

My voice became softer.

“You don’t know.””

He looked at me.

“You don’t know what it felt like standing there watching you choose her.””

His eyes filled with shame.

“You’re right.””

I looked away.

Because I didn’t want to see him hurting.

I had spent too many weeks being the only one hurting.

Before he could say anything else, there was a knock at the door.

Both of us froze.

Marcus looked toward the entrance.

Nobody came to our house at midnight.

Especially not after everything that happened.

The knock came again.

Three slow taps.

Marcus walked toward the door.

I stood.

“Don’t.””

He looked back.

“Why?””

“Because we don’t know who it is.””

He nodded.

Then slowly opened the door.

A man stood outside.

Older.

Tired.

With gray hair and a face that looked strangely familiar.

Marcus stared.

The man stared back.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then the man whispered:

“You got taller.””

Marcus stepped backward.

“No.””

The man’s eyes filled.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You’re dead.””

The man looked down.

“I know.””

The words were horrifying.

Marcus’s hand gripped the door.

“Who are you?””

The man took a shaky breath.

“I’m your father.””

I watched Marcus’s entire world collapse.

Again.

The man stepped inside slowly.

Evelyn appeared behind us.

And the moment she saw him, she covered her mouth.

“You…”

The man looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“Sorry?””

She walked closer.

“Fifteen years.””

He lowered his head.

“Evelyn…”

“Fifteen years, I buried you.””

His voice became quiet.

“I know.””

“No.””

She pointed toward him.

“You don’t know.””

The pain in her voice filled the room.

“You left me to raise our son alone. You let him believe his father was dead.””

The man looked at Marcus.

“I was trying to protect him.””

Marcus laughed.

“Protect me?””

His voice was empty.

“You let me cry over you.””

The man said nothing.

“You let me hate myself for forgetting your voice.””

Marcus’s eyes turned red.

“You don’t get to come back and call that protection.””

I looked at the man standing in front of us.

The man who had been a ghost.

The man who had somehow connected himself to Vanessa.

Then he looked at her.

And his expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“Vanessa.””

Her face went pale.

Marcus noticed.

“You know her.””

The man looked away.

That answer was enough.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Why do you know her?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa finally whispered:

“Because he’s my father too.””

The room went silent.

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Marcus stared.

“No.””

Vanessa started crying.

“I didn’t know at first.””

Marcus looked at his father.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back.

“You’re saying…”

The man closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

May you like

His voice was barely audible.

“Vanessa is your half-sister.””
