Chapter 19: The Final Betrayal
The room stayed silent long after the call ended.
Nobody wanted to speak first.
Because everyone was afraid of what the next words would reveal.
Marcus stood in the center of the room, holding the phone like it was something dangerous.
Maybe it was.
A single call had changed everything again.
His father wasn’t his father.
His family wasn’t what he believed.
And now someone was claiming the man who raised him had been murdered.
I watched him carefully.
For the first time since I met him, Marcus looked completely lost.
Not the confident man who walked into business meetings.
Not the husband who thought he had everything under control.
Just a son trying to understand why everyone around him had lied.
Daniel finally spoke.
“She’s telling the truth.””
Marcus looked at him.
The room went still.
“What?””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“I knew Gabriel.””
Everyone stared.
Evelyn looked shocked.
“You knew?””
Daniel nodded.
“He was my friend.””
Marcus’s voice became quiet.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Because after Gabriel died, everything became dangerous.””
“Who killed him?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Marcus turned away.
“No.””
His voice shook.
“No more.””
He looked at everyone.
“No more half-truths. No more protecting me. No more deciding what I can handle.””
Nobody interrupted.
“Tell me everything.””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“Gabriel discovered Richard and Clara were working together.””
Marcus frowned.
“Working together?””
“Yes.””
Daniel nodded.
“They weren’t enemies.””
The realization hit everyone.
Richard and Clara had spent years pretending to fight.
But they were partners.
“They created the conflict,” Daniel continued.
“They made everyone believe they were against each other.””
I felt sick.
“So Vanessa…”
Daniel nodded.
“She was sent into your life as part of their plan.””
Marcus looked down.
Everything connected.
The timing.
The affair.
The pregnancy.
The secrets.
All of it.
Then Daniel said something that made the room freeze.
“But Gabriel discovered something bigger.””
Marcus looked up.
“What?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Gabriel discovered that Richard wasn’t the person controlling everything.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then who was?””
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
Nobody moved.
Marcus noticed.
His face changed.
“No.””
Evelyn started crying.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
He stepped back.
“Don’t.””
Daniel whispered:
“Your mother didn’t order Gabriel’s death.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Then why are you looking at her?””
Evelyn covered her face.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Marcus stared.
“From who?””
She looked up.
And the pain in her eyes was unbearable.
“From myself.””
The words made no sense.
Until she continued.
“I made a deal.””
Everyone went silent.
“With who?””
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
“Your uncle.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
“You helped Richard?””
“No.””
She shook her head quickly.
“I thought I was saving you.””
“Saving me from what?””
Evelyn cried.
“From Gabriel.””
The room froze.
Marcus stared.
“My biological father?””
Evelyn nodded.
“I thought he was dangerous.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“He wasn’t.””
“I didn’t know that.””
Evelyn’s voice broke.
“I was told he wanted to take you away.””
Marcus shook his head.
“So you helped them?””
“I gave them information.””
Nobody spoke.
“What information?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Where Gabriel was meeting Daniel.””
The truth hit like a weapon.
Marcus closed his eyes.
“That night…”
Daniel nodded.
“That was the night Gabriel died.””
Evelyn collapsed into the chair.
“I didn’t know they would kill him.””
Marcus looked devastated.
“You didn’t know?””
His voice was barely a whisper.
“You gave them the chance.””
Evelyn cried harder.
“I was wrong.””
Marcus looked away.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then his phone rang.
Again.
Everyone froze.
This time, the number wasn’t unknown.
It was Richard.
Marcus answered.
“What do you want?””
Richard laughed.
“You finally found out.””
Marcus’s face hardened.
“You killed Gabriel.””
“No.””
A pause.
“I allowed it.””
The honesty was worse.
Marcus gripped the phone.
“Why?””
Richard’s voice became colder.
“Because Gabriel found the document.””
“What document?””
“The one your entire family has been killing each other over.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
Richard continued.
“And now you have it.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
Richard laughed.
“Your father hid the final piece inside the one person nobody would suspect.””
The room went silent.
Everyone looked around.
Then Richard said:
“Your mother.””
The call ended.
Marcus slowly turned toward Evelyn.
“What did you hide?””
Evelyn was shaking.
“I don’t know.””
Then Daniel noticed something.
A small necklace around Evelyn’s neck.
Something she had worn for years.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Evelyn.””
She looked up.
“What?””
“Where did you get that necklace?””
Her face changed.
“My mother gave it to me.””
Daniel stared.
“No.””
He reached forward.
“That belonged to Gabriel.””
Everyone froze.
Marcus looked at the necklace.
“The final piece…”
Daniel whispered:
May you like
“It was never hidden.””
“It was with you the entire time.””
