Chapter 1: The Woman in My Home
I thought the hardest moment of my pregnancy would be giving birth. I was wrong. The hardest moment was standing in my own living room, seven months pregnant, and realizing my husband had been sharing our home with another woman.
The ultrasound pictures were still taped to the refrigerator.
The tiny white crib Marcus built with his own hands was still sitting beside our bedroom window.
The baby blankets my mother had knitted were folded neatly in the corner.
Everything around me screamed family.
But the man I loved was standing ten feet away from me, protecting someone else.
I had come home early that Friday evening because my back pain had become unbearable. My doctor told me to rest more, and Marcus had promised he would make dinner.
“You work too hard,” he had said that morning, kissing my forehead before leaving.
“I’ll take care of you and our little girl tonight.””
I believed him.
I always believed him.
The front door opened quietly, and I stepped inside expecting the smell of pasta and the sound of Marcus humming while he cooked.
Instead, I heard laughter.
A woman’s laughter.
My first thought was that someone had stopped by. Maybe a friend. Maybe a neighbor.
Then I heard a voice I didn’t recognize.
“You really think she suspects anything?””
My entire body went cold.
I slowly walked toward the living room.
And there she was.
A woman I had never seen before was sitting on my sofa.
My sofa.
The one Marcus and I picked out after three weekends of furniture shopping.
She was wearing one of Marcus’s oversized shirts.
My husband’s shirt.
For a few seconds, my brain refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.
Marcus stood beside her, frozen.
The woman looked at me calmly, almost like she was annoyed that I had interrupted something.
Then Marcus whispered my name.
“Aaliyah…”
I looked at him.
Then at her.
Then back at him.
“You brought her into our home?””
My voice barely sounded like mine.
The woman crossed her legs and smiled.
“I was wondering when you’d finally find out.””
My hands began trembling.
“Who are you?””
She looked directly into my eyes.
“Vanessa.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But the way she said it told me she wanted it to.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Aaliyah, let me explain.””
“Explain what?”” I asked.
“Why there’s a woman wearing your clothes in our house?””
His silence was the answer.
I felt something inside me crack.
Not break.
Crack.
Because a broken heart happens when you lose someone.
A cracked heart happens when you realize you never truly knew them.
Vanessa stood up slowly.
“Marcus loves me.””
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“You’re serious?””
She shrugged.
“You should accept it.””
My hand instinctively moved to my stomach.
Our baby girl kicked softly, as if she could feel my fear.
“You’re carrying on an affair with my husband while I’m carrying his child?””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
For a moment, I saw anger flash across her face.
Then she walked closer.
“You think a baby means he belongs to you?””
I stepped back.
“Don’t talk about my child.””
“Why?”” she asked.
“Because the truth hurts?””
Marcus grabbed her arm.
“Vanessa, stop.””
But he didn’t tell her to leave.
That was the part that destroyed me.
He wasn’t protecting me.
He wasn’t protecting our marriage.
He was protecting her.
I looked at him, waiting for him to finally become the man I married.
The man who used to bring me soup when I was sick.
The man who cried when we saw our baby’s heartbeat for the first time.
The man who promised me forever.
Instead, he looked away.
“You should have told me you were coming home early,” he said.
I blinked.
“What?””
“You shouldn’t have walked in like this.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“You’re blaming me?””
“No,” he said quickly.
“I’m saying you didn’t need to make a scene.””
A scene.
That was what he called discovering betrayal in my own house.
I took a shaky breath.
“Marcus, I’m seven months pregnant with your baby.””
His jaw tightened.
“I know.””
“Then why are you standing there like I’m the problem?””
Before he could answer, Vanessa stepped closer.
“Maybe because he’s tired of pretending.””
The words barely left her mouth before my anger took over.
I moved toward her.
Not to hurt her.
Just to demand an explanation.
But Vanessa reacted first.
Her hand flew through the air.
The sound echoed across the room.
For a second, I didn’t feel anything.
Then the pain arrived.
My cheek burned.
I stumbled backward, one hand immediately covering my stomach.
My baby.
That was my first thought.
Not my face.
Not Vanessa.
My baby.
Marcus rushed toward Vanessa.
“Are you okay?””
I stared at him.
The room spun.
“You’re defending her?””
“She didn’t mean it,” Marcus snapped.
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“She slapped me.””
“You shouldn’t have confronted her like that.””
My eyes filled with tears.
The man I loved was standing in front of me, explaining why another woman hurt me.
Then the room became even colder.
Because someone else had been watching.
Marcus’s mother, Evelyn, slowly stood from the sofa.
She had been sitting there the entire time.
Silent.
Watching.
Her face was pale.
“Marcus,” she said quietly.
He turned.
“What?””
Evelyn looked at Vanessa.
Then back at her son.
“I think you should know something.””
Marcus frowned.
“Know what?””
Evelyn took a deep breath.
Then she spoke.
“The baby isn’t yours.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Marcus’s face changed instantly.
“What did you just say?””
Evelyn pointed at Vanessa.
“Ask her who the father is.””
Vanessa’s confident smile disappeared.
And for the first time since I entered that room, she looked afraid.
Marcus slowly turned toward her.
“Vanessa…”
She took a step back.
“Marcus, wait…”
His voice dropped.
“Who is the father?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
But no words came out.
And in that moment, I realized something.
The woman who destroyed my marriage…
might have just destroyed his too.
But then Vanessa looked at Evelyn with pure hatred in her eyes.
May you like
And I knew there was something much bigger hiding behind this betrayal.
Something nobody had told me.
