Chapter 3: The Name on the Paper
Marcus read the paper three times.
Then a fourth.
Like if he stared long enough, the words would rearrange themselves into something that made sense.
They didn’t.
I watched his face lose every bit of certainty he had left.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
“Marcus.””
His eyes lifted toward me.
For a moment, I saw the man I married.
The confused boy underneath the betrayal.
The man who didn’t know which truth to believe.
Then he looked away.
Evelyn reached for the paper.
“He needs to say it himself.””
Marcus gripped the page tightly.
“My father…”
His voice broke.
“My father knew Vanessa’s mother.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
The room became painfully quiet.
I looked at her.
“You knew his family?””
She didn’t respond.
Marcus turned toward her.
“You knew who I was before we met?””
Vanessa’s silence was louder than any confession.
His jaw tightened.
“All this time…”
He laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
“All this time you made me think you randomly found me.””
Vanessa finally spoke.
“I didn’t plan for this to happen.””
Marcus stared at her.
“You moved into my life.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“You came into my marriage.””
Her eyes flashed.
“Because you weren’t happy.””
The words hit him.
And I felt something inside me twist.
Because that was the excuse every person who cheats gives.
They blame the empty space before admitting they were the ones who created it.
Marcus looked at me.
“Aaliyah…”
I stepped back.
“Don’t.””
His face fell.
“I know what I did.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice shook.
“You know you got caught.””
The truth hurt both of us.
But I needed him to hear it.
“You didn’t come home one day and confess. You didn’t choose me. You chose her until she became a problem.””
Marcus lowered his eyes.
For once, he had no defense.
Vanessa watched us silently.
And I noticed something.
She wasn’t crying because she hurt me.
She wasn’t crying because she felt guilty.
She was crying because she was losing control.
That realization made me angry.
“You never loved him, did you?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“What?””
“You loved what he could give you.””
Her expression hardened.
“You don’t know anything about me.””
“I know enough.””
I pointed around the room.
“You came into my home. You wore my husband’s clothes. You sat where I sat. You looked me in the face and told me to accept losing my family.””
My voice became quieter.
“But you never expected to lose him.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
I was right.
Marcus saw it too.
He turned toward her.
“Who is the father?””
Vanessa looked down.
“I told you. It’s complicated.””
“No.””
His voice was cold now.
“No more excuses.””
He stepped closer.
“I gave you everything.””
A bitter smile crossed her face.
“Did you?””
The room went still.
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at Evelyn.
Then back at him.
“You really don’t know.””
A chill moved through me.
“What don’t we know?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, Evelyn’s phone rang.
Everyone looked at it.
She glanced at the screen.
And her face changed.
Marcus noticed.
“Who is it?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
“Mom.””
Slowly, she turned the phone around.
Marcus looked at the name.
And his expression became confused.
“Why is my father calling?””
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone knew the same thing.
Marcus’s father had been dead for fifteen years.
Evelyn’s hand trembled.
The phone kept ringing.
Again.
And again.
Marcus stared at the screen.
“That’s impossible.””
I felt my baby move inside me.
A small reminder that life continued even when everything else collapsed.
Evelyn finally answered.
She lifted the phone to her ear.
“Hello?””
The person on the other end said something.
Her eyes widened.
Then she slowly looked at Marcus.
“What?””
Marcus stepped forward.
“What did they say?””
Evelyn’s face went pale.
Then she whispered:
“They said they have proof your father never died.””
Nobody breathed.
Nobody moved.
And Vanessa, the woman who had destroyed my marriage, suddenly looked terrified.
Because whatever secret she had been protecting…
wasn’t about a baby.
May you like
It was about a man who was supposed to be gone forever.
Would you like the next chapters to lean more into Vanessa’s hidden connection to Marcus’s father or Aaliyah’s fight to protect herself and her baby?
