Chapter 14: The Truth Daniel Buried

Marcus didn’t open the envelope immediately.

For the first time in hours, he hesitated.

I understood why.

Every answer had created another question.

Every truth had uncovered a deeper lie.

He looked at Daniel.

“Is it true?””

Daniel said nothing.

That was enough.

Marcus’s expression changed.

“Dad.””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You don’t get to say that.””

His voice became louder.

“You don’t get to call fifteen years of lies mistakes.””

Daniel looked away.

“I was trying to survive.””

“And what about us?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“What about Mom?””

Evelyn had arrived at the house moments earlier after Marcus called her.

She stood near the doorway now, silently watching.

Daniel looked at her.

“I thought leaving would keep you safe.””

Evelyn laughed sadly.

“You didn’t keep me safe.””

Her voice broke.

“You destroyed me.””

The words hit him.

Daniel lowered his head.

“I know.””

Marcus picked up the envelope.

“Then I’m opening this.””

Nobody stopped him.

Inside was a photograph.

And a letter.

Marcus looked at the photo first.

Then froze.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

He handed it to me.

It was a picture of Daniel.

Standing beside another man.

Richard.

But they weren’t fighting.

They were smiling.

Friends.

Partners.

My heart sank.

Marcus read the letter.

His hands shook.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

He swallowed.

“My father knew Richard before.””

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at him.

“How long?””

“Years.””

“Before you disappeared?””

“Yes.””

The answer made everything worse.

Marcus continued reading.

Then his expression changed.

“He wasn’t just investigating Richard.””

Daniel said nothing.

Marcus looked at him.

“You were working with him.””

The room went silent.

Evelyn stared.

“What?””

Daniel finally spoke.

“At first.””

Marcus looked sick.

“Explain.””

Daniel sat down.

“I didn’t know what Richard was doing.””

“You trusted him.””

“Yes.””

“And when you found out?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“I tried to expose him.””

Richard laughed.

“Such a heroic story.””

Everyone turned.

Richard leaned against the wall.

“You forgot the part where you helped me.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“I was wrong.””

Richard smiled.

“You were greedy.””

The accusation hurt because it had truth behind it.

Daniel didn’t deny everything.

“I made choices.””

Marcus stared at his father.

“How much of my life was a lie?””

Daniel looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

That answer broke something.

Marcus turned away.

I wanted to comfort him.

But I couldn’t forget.

The pain he caused me.

The choices he made.

The damage he created.

Everyone here had a reason.

Everyone had an explanation.

But explanations didn’t erase consequences.

Then Evelyn noticed something.

She pointed at the photo.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked.

“There’s someone else.””

Behind Daniel and Richard was another person.

Only partially visible.

A woman.

Marcus took the photo.

“Who is that?””

Daniel’s face changed.

And for the first time all night, he looked truly afraid.

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Who is she?””

Daniel whispered:

“She was supposed to be gone.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Richard smiled.

“Now you understand.””

Marcus turned toward him.

“Understand what?””

Richard walked closer.

“That this story was never about me.””

He pointed at the photograph.

“It started with her.””

The woman in the picture.

The woman nobody recognized.

The woman Daniel thought was gone.

Then Marcus looked at the back of the photo.

There was writing.

A name.

A name that made Evelyn collapse into the chair.

Because she knew it.

“Who is she?”” Marcus asked.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Your aunt.””
