Chapter 7: The Woman Who Watched Us

The photograph stayed on Marcus’s phone screen for almost a full minute.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Because sometimes the truth doesn’t arrive like an explosion.

Sometimes it arrives quietly.

A single image.

A single date.

A single piece of evidence that makes every memory you trusted suddenly feel dangerous.

I stared at the picture.

There was no mistake.

It was Vanessa.

Standing across the street from our house.

Not months ago.

Not after meeting Marcus.

Before.

Before the affair.

Before the lies.

Before I even knew her name.

“She was watching us,” I whispered.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

His face wasn’t angry anymore.

It was something worse.

Disbelief.

“You knew who I was before we met.””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“I knew about your family.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

His voice shook.

“You knew me.””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Marcus stepped backward.

“How long?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Marcus…”

“How long were you watching my life?””

Daniel looked at her sharply.

“Vanessa.””

She flinched.

“I didn’t mean for it to happen like this.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“You keep saying that.””

His hand tightened around the phone.

“You didn’t mean to hurt me. You didn’t mean to lie. You didn’t mean to ruin my marriage.””

He looked directly at her.

“But somehow every choice you made hurt me anyway.””

I watched Vanessa’s expression change.

For the first time, she didn’t look like the woman who had confidently walked into my home.

She looked like someone whose secret had finally caught up with her.

“I was angry,” she whispered.

“At who?””

She looked at Daniel.

“My father.””

The room went quiet.

Vanessa continued.

“My whole life, I heard stories about the man who abandoned us.””

Daniel looked down.

“My mother told me he destroyed everything.””

“She was wrong,” Daniel said quietly.

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“Was she?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew there were missing pieces.

Daniel had left.

Even if he had reasons.

Even if he believed he was protecting people.

He still left.

Vanessa turned toward Marcus.

“When I found out you were his son, I wanted to know what kind of person you were.””

Marcus stared.

“So you followed me?””

“At first.””

“At first?””

Her silence confirmed it.

I felt a chill.

“You were there before I met you.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked away.

“Because I wanted to see what kind of woman my brother would choose.””

The word sounded strange.

Brother.

A stranger becoming family overnight.

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I can’t believe this.””

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

Everyone froze.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?”” Evelyn asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

Then his face became serious.

“I thought you promised you were done.””

My heart started racing.

Marcus noticed.

“Who are you talking to?””

Daniel raised a hand.

“Wait.””

The person on the other end said something.

Daniel’s eyes moved toward Vanessa.

Then toward Marcus.

“No.””

A pause.

“That’s not possible.””

Marcus walked closer.

“Give me the phone.””

Daniel ignored him.

“You stay away from my family.””

The voice on the other end said something that made Daniel go completely still.

Then he whispered:

“You have no idea what you’ve done.””

The call ended.

Marcus grabbed the phone.

“Who was that?””

Daniel looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s a lie.””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said:

“It was someone who knows about your family.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“Everyone seems to know things except me.””

I looked at Evelyn.

She looked exhausted.

Then she said something that changed everything.

“There’s another secret.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“I never told you the truth about your father leaving.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Evelyn.””

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“He deserves to know.””

The room went silent.

She looked at Marcus.

“Your father didn’t disappear because he wanted to leave us.””

Marcus waited.

“He disappeared because someone was trying to kill him.””

Nobody breathed.

Daniel closed his eyes.

And I knew.

He knew exactly who.

Marcus looked between them.

“Who?””

Evelyn hesitated.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“Someone inside our own family.””
