Chapter 8: The Enemy Inside

The hidden passage smelled like dust and old wood.

Every step echoed through the narrow hallway.

Nobody spoke.

Not because there was nothing to say.

Because there was too much.

I walked behind Ethan, holding the phone with the threatening message still open.

Someone had photographed us.

Someone had followed us.

Someone knew exactly where we were.

“How long has this passage existed?”” I asked.

Ethan didn’t turn around.

“Twenty years.””

“Twenty years?””

“Your mother had it built after she discovered people were entering your father’s office without permission.””

Michael walked behind us quietly.

I noticed.

For the first time all night, he wasn’t arguing.

He was scared.

“Michael.””

He looked at me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His face tightened.

“Because your mother made me promise.””

“You promised her?””

“Yes.””

“You kept a promise to her and broke every promise you made to me.””

He looked down.

“I know.””

That answer surprised me.

No excuses.

No defense.

Just guilt.

The passage opened into a small underground room.

Inside was a desk.

A chair.

And dozens of files stacked against the wall.

My heart started racing.

“What is this?””

Ethan turned on a small lamp.

“Your mother’s archive.””

I walked toward the desk.

There were documents everywhere.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Names.

Dates.

One folder had my name written on it.

Daniel Carter.

I reached for it.

Michael immediately said:

“Don’t.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because once you open it, you can’t pretend you don’t know.””

I opened it anyway.

Inside were photographs of me.

As a child.

At school.

Playing soccer.

Walking home.

My hands went cold.

“They were watching me.””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

“For years?””

“Yes.””

I turned the page.

There was a list.

Names.

People connected to my family.

At the bottom was one name circled in red.

Vanessa Reed.

I stopped.

My chest tightened.

“No.””

Ethan looked away.

I stared at the page.

“What does this mean?””

Nobody answered.

“Tell me.””

Michael spoke quietly.

“Your mother suspected Vanessa was connected.””

I looked toward the doorway.

Vanessa wasn’t there.

She had stayed behind with Lily.

A thousand thoughts rushed through my mind.

Was everything fake?

Was our entire relationship a trap?

Then Ethan said something that made me stop.

“Read the notes.””

I looked at the folder.

Behind Vanessa’s name was another page.

My mother’s handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

*Vanessa is not the enemy. She is being forced.*

I exhaled.

“She knew.””

Michael nodded.

“Your mother knew almost everything.””

I kept reading.

*Someone close to Daniel is controlling Vanessa. Find the person before they force her to choose.*

I looked up.

“Choose what?””

Ethan’s expression darkened.

“Whether you live.””

Before I could respond, the lights went out.

Complete darkness.

Then we heard footsteps.

Someone was inside the passage.

Michael whispered:

“Get down.””

A door opened.

A figure entered the room.

I couldn’t see their face.

But I heard their voice.

“Daniel.””

My blood froze.

Because I knew that voice.

“Vanessa?””

The lights flickered back on.

She stood there.

Her face covered in tears.

But she wasn’t alone.

A man stood behind her holding a gun.

And the man was someone I knew.

Someone who had smiled at me during my wedding.

Someone who had hugged me only hours earlier.

My uncle Michael’s closest friend.

The man who had arranged my mother’s funeral.

He looked at me and said:

“I’m sorry, Daniel.””

I stared.

“Why?””

His expression didn’t change.

“Because your mother was right.””

The gun lifted slightly.

“She was betrayed by someone she trusted.””

I looked around the room.

At Ethan.

At Vanessa.

At Michael.

May you like

Then he said the words that destroyed everything.

“And the person who betrayed her is standing right here.””
