Chapter 4: The Secret She Carried

The ballroom doors slammed shut behind the man.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The music had stopped. The guests who had been laughing minutes earlier now stood frozen, watching my life collapse in front of them.

I stared at Vanessa.

The woman I had promised to love forever.

The woman whose hand I had held while we exchanged vows.

The woman my mother’s final message accused.

“Your wife knows where I am.””

Those words burned inside my head.

“Daniel,” Vanessa whispered.

I couldn’t answer.

My eyes stayed on her.

“Is it true?””

Her face crumpled.

“Please…”

“Is it true?””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I know where your mother is.””

The room erupted.

People gasped.

Someone whispered, “His mother is alive?””

I felt like the ground beneath me had disappeared.

“You knew?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked down.

“I didn’t know at first.””

“When did you find out?””

She closed her eyes.

“Eight months ago.””

Eight months.

The number hit me harder than anything else.

She had known for eight months.

We had planned this wedding.

We had chosen flowers.

We had tasted cakes.

We had looked at houses together.

And all that time, she carried a secret about my mother.

“How could you?””

My voice sounded broken.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“Everyone says that when they’re hiding something.””

She flinched.

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to hate her.

But the worst part was that I still saw the woman who held me together after my mother’s funeral.

I still remembered Vanessa sitting beside me at three in the morning, telling me I wasn’t alone.

Now I didn’t know which memories were real.

“Tell me everything,” I said.

Vanessa looked around.

“Not here.””

“No more secrets.””

She swallowed.

“Daniel, if I tell you, there’s no going back.””

I stepped closer.

“There was never going back.””

She nodded slowly.

Then she looked at Lily.

“Where is her guardian?””

Lily pointed toward the exit.

“My aunt is waiting outside.””

Vanessa looked surprised.

“You came with someone?””

Lily nodded.

“She told me to stay close to Daniel.””

“Who told you?””

The little girl looked confused.

“The lady.””

I felt a chill.

“My mother?””

Lily nodded.

“She said you would ask a lot of questions.””

For the first time all night, Vanessa looked completely lost.

A few minutes later, we were in a private room behind the ballroom.

Just me, Vanessa, and Lily.

I locked the door.

“Start talking.””

Vanessa sat down slowly.

Her hands were shaking.

“Three years ago, after your mother’s funeral, I found something strange.””

“What?””

“She had left me a voicemail.””

I stared at her.

“A voicemail?””

“She called me the night before everyone thought she died.””

My chest tightened.

“What did she say?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“She said she didn’t trust anyone around you.””

“Anyone?””

“She specifically mentioned one person.””

“Who?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“Your uncle.””

The room went silent.

My uncle Michael.

My father’s younger brother.

The man who helped organize my mother’s funeral.

The man who hugged me and told me everything would be okay.

“That’s impossible.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I thought so too.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because two days later, someone broke into my apartment.””

I froze.

“What?””

“They weren’t looking for money.””

She looked at me.

“They were looking for your mother’s voicemail.””

My stomach dropped.

“Did they find it?””

“No.””

“Where is it?””

Vanessa reached into her purse.

She pulled out her phone.

“I kept a copy.””

She pressed a button.

Static filled the room.

Then my mother’s voice appeared.

“Vanessa, if you’re hearing this, something happened to me.””

I stopped breathing.

My mother sounded frightened.

Not sick.

Not weak.

Afraid.

“Do not tell Daniel everything yet. He is being watched.””

My eyes moved toward Vanessa.

The recording continued.

“Trust carefully. The people closest to him may not be who they seem.””

Then came a sound.

A door opening.

My mother gasped.

Someone entered the room.

The recording ended.

I stared at the phone.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because the next day, I received a message.””

She turned the phone around.

A message was still saved.

One sentence.

One warning.

*If Daniel finds out, his mother dies.*

My blood went cold.

“She’s alive,” I whispered.

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Vanessa looked toward the window.

“She’s been hiding in a safe house.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know the exact location.””

I grabbed the edge of the table.

“You said you knew where she was.””

“I know how to contact her.””

“Then call her.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Daniel…”

“Call her.””

She picked up the phone.

Before she could press anything, Lily suddenly spoke.

“Someone is outside.””

We all turned.

The door handle slowly moved.

Once.

Twice.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

“Vanessa.””

Her face drained of color.

She recognized the voice.

May you like

And so did I.

It was my uncle Michael.
