Chapter 13: The Woman Everyone Blamed

For a moment, nobody moved.

Vanessa stood in the doorway, frozen.

My father’s words echoed through the room.

“That’s the person who betrayed us.””

I looked at her.

The woman I married.

The woman who held my hand while I promised her forever.

The woman my mother trusted.

My mind couldn’t decide what to believe.

“Vanessa…”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

My father stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

She flinched.

Not because she was angry.

Because she was hurt.

“Thomas,” she whispered.

My father’s face tightened.

“You knew the truth.””

“I was trying to protect him.””

“By hiding everything?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I never wanted you involved.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice shook.

“You all decided what I could handle. You all chose my life for me.””

Nobody answered.

Because it was true.

Vanessa slowly stepped into the room.

“I didn’t betray your family.””

My father stared at her.

“Then explain why your name was in the files.””

She looked down.

“Because they forced me.””

I watched her carefully.

“Who?””

Her voice became quiet.

“The Circle.””

The room went still.

Vanessa continued.

“Years ago, before I met you, my father worked for them.””

My chest tightened.

“Your father?””

She nodded.

“He handled their money.””

Michael looked shocked.

“I didn’t know that.””

“Of course you didn’t,” Vanessa said.

“They made sure nobody knew.””

She looked at me.

“When I found out what they were doing, I tried to leave.””

“What happened?””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“They threatened my family.””

Silence.

“They told me if I ever exposed them, they would destroy everyone I loved.””

My anger weakened.

Not disappeared.

But weakened.

“Then why marry me?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because your mother asked me to.””

My father stared.

“She asked you?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She knew I was trapped.””

She pulled something from her pocket.

A small envelope.

“She gave me this three years ago.””

My hands went cold.

“Why didn’t you show me?””

“Because she told me not to.””

She handed it to me.

I opened it.

My mother’s handwriting appeared.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, Vanessa is still beside you.

Trust her.

She is not the person who hurt us.

She is the person who survived them.

I stopped reading.

My eyes moved toward Vanessa.

She looked away.

My mother had trusted her.

But why?

I looked at my father.

“Then why did you accuse her?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Finally, he said:

“Because I didn’t know if she was still being controlled.””

Vanessa looked hurt.

“You thought I betrayed Daniel.””

“I thought anyone could.””

That answer silenced everyone.

Because maybe that was the real tragedy.

The Circle had destroyed more than our family.

They had destroyed our ability to trust.

Suddenly, Ethan’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed instantly.

“What?””

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“We have a problem.””

“What?””

He lowered the phone.

“Robert has escaped.””

Michael cursed under his breath.

My father looked worried.

“That means he’s going after the last piece.””

“What last piece?””

My father looked at the pendant in my hand.

“The evidence your mother hid.””

I stared at it.

“The pendant?””

He nodded.

“But the pendant isn’t the evidence.””

I frowned.

“Then what is?””

My father looked at me.

“You.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

He stepped closer.

“Your mother didn’t hide information in an object.””

He pointed at me.

“She hid it in your memories.””

I felt confused.

“My memories?””

“When you were young, your mother taught you a phrase.””

I searched my mind.

A phrase.

Something from childhood.

Something I had forgotten.

My father whispered:

“Blue flowers bloom where the truth sleeps.””

My heart stopped.

Because suddenly I remembered.

A garden.

My mother holding my hand.

A wooden box buried beneath blue flowers.

And a promise.

“Daniel,” my mother had said.

“Never open this unless everyone you love is in danger.””

I stepped back.

The memory came rushing back.

My mother hadn’t hidden the truth.

May you like

She had hidden a way to find it.

And suddenly, I knew where we had to go.
