Chapter 5: The Man Who Buried My Mother

The door opened slowly.

My uncle stood there.

Michael Carter.

The man who held my shoulders at my mother’s funeral and told me he would always protect me.

The man who brought me home after I collapsed beside her grave.

The man who had just heard everything.

“Daniel,” he said calmly.

I stared at him.

“How long have you been listening?””

His expression didn’t change.

“Long enough.””

Vanessa immediately stood between us.

“Michael, leave.””

He looked at her.

“You always were emotional.””

My hands tightened into fists.

“Why are you here?””

He looked at the pendant in my hand.

“Because you opened something that should have stayed closed.””

My heart pounded.

“You know about the pendant.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my mother left it?””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“You knew she was alive?””

A pause.

Then he said:

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Lily moved closer to me.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“My entire family lied to me.””

Michael sighed.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“No. Explain.””

He walked into the room.

I immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t come closer.””

He stopped.

For the first time, his expression changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

“Your mother made choices that put everyone at risk.””

“My mother tried to expose someone.””

“She tried to destroy everything.””

“Good.””

Michael stared at me.

“You think this is simple.””

“I think my mother disappeared and everyone around me lied.””

His jaw tightened.

“You don’t know what she found.””

“Then tell me.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“She told you about the voicemail?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Michael shook his head.

“Of course she did.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means she chose you over herself.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Michael looked at Vanessa.

“She was supposed to hand over the evidence.””

My eyes moved to Vanessa.

“What evidence?””

Vanessa looked away.

Michael continued.

“The evidence your mother collected.””

I felt betrayed all over again.

“You had evidence?””

Vanessa’s voice was barely audible.

“I had part of it.””

“Why?””

“Because your mother trusted me.””

I stared at her.

“She trusted you.””

“Yes.””

“More than she trusted me?””

Vanessa looked devastated.

“No. She was trying to protect you.””

Michael interrupted.

“That’s what she always did.””

I turned toward him.

“What are you saying?””

He looked older suddenly.

Tired.

“You think your mother died because she was unlucky?””

Nobody spoke.

“You think someone just decided to fake records and hide a body?””

My stomach twisted.

“Whose body was buried?””

Michael didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

I stepped back.

“My mother’s grave…”

“Was empty.””

The words hit like a punch.

For years, I had visited that grave.

For years, I had talked to a stone.

My mother wasn’t there.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A whisper came through.

“Daniel.””

My entire body froze.

“Mom?””

Michael’s face changed.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

The voice was shaking.

“Listen carefully. You don’t have much time.””

“Where are you?””

“Don’t ask that.””

“Mom, I need to see you.””

“You will.””

A pause.

Then she whispered:

“But first you need to know who helped them.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Then Michael.

“Who?””

My mother’s voice became quieter.

“The person standing closest to you.””

I stopped breathing.

Slowly, everyone looked at each other.

The call continued.

“Daniel, the person who betrayed me is not the person you think.””

The lights flickered.

A loud crash came from outside.

Then my mother said one final sentence.

“The man you trust most is the one who signed my death certificate.””

The call ended.

I looked at Michael.

He looked terrified.

Not angry.

May you like

Terrified.

Because he knew exactly who she meant.
