Chapter 17: The Teacher Behind the Lies

My mother’s words hung over the garden.

The person who taught me how to hide.

Nobody understood.

Except her.

She looked toward the house.

“I should have told you sooner.””

My voice shook.

“You should have told me everything.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

I wanted to be angry.

I was angry.

But seeing her standing there alive made everything complicated.

The mother I lost was standing in front of me.

But she was also the person who let me mourn her.

“How could you watch me suffer?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I watched from a distance.””

The confession hurt.

“You watched?””

“I had to know you were safe.””

“Safe?””

I laughed.

“I got married to someone who was forced to lie to me. I discovered my entire family was built on secrets.””

She lowered her head.

“I know.””

My father stepped between us.

“Daniel, she saved your life.””

I looked at him.

“By disappearing?””

“Yes.””

“No.””

My voice became louder.

“By choosing for me.””

Nobody answered.

Because they knew I was right.

My mother accepted that.

“I was wrong.””

That surprised me.

She looked at me.

“I spent years believing that protecting you meant controlling what you knew.””

A tear moved down her face.

“But I forgot you were my son, not a child.””

The garden became silent.

Then Ethan spoke.

“We need to focus.””

My mother nodded.

“She’s right.””

I looked at Ethan.

“She?””

He pointed toward the house.

A woman stood near the doorway.

Not my mother.

Someone else.

Someone older.

Someone I didn’t recognize.

My mother’s face changed.

“No.””

The woman smiled.

“Hello, Elena.””

My mother froze.

I looked at her.

“Who is that?””

My mother whispered:

“My mentor.””

The woman stepped into the garden.

“I taught you everything you know.””

The realization hit.

The teacher.

The person who taught my mother how to hide.

The woman looked at me.

“You must be Daniel.””

I didn’t answer.

She smiled.

“You look like your father.””

My father moved forward.

“Stay away from him.””

She ignored him.

“I’m disappointed, Elena.””

My mother’s expression hardened.

“You were never supposed to involve him.””

The woman laughed softly.

“You involved him the moment you gave birth.””

Nobody spoke.

My mother stepped closer.

“You taught me how to survive.””

“Yes.””

“You taught me how to disappear.””

“Yes.””

“You taught me how to manipulate people.””

The woman smiled.

“Exactly.””

My stomach turned.

My mother looked at me.

“She’s the founder of the Circle.””

Everything went silent.

Not Robert.

Not Michael.

Not Vanessa.

Her.

The woman standing calmly in front of us.

The person who had been hidden behind every secret.

The woman smiled.

“Your mother was my greatest student.””

I stared.

“Then why did you destroy her family?””

The woman looked at me.

“Because she forgot the first rule.””

“What rule?””

She smiled.

“Never trust love more than power.””

My mother stepped forward.

“You don’t get to talk about love.””

The woman looked amused.

“Yet here you are.””

A phone rang.

The woman answered.

Then she smiled.

“Excellent.””

She looked at me.

“They found your sister.””

My blood went cold.

Emma.

“Where?””

The woman put the phone away.

“Somewhere your mother never wanted you to look.””

My mother’s face changed.

“What did you do?””

The woman smiled.

“I gave Daniel the final choice.””

“What choice?””

She looked directly at me.

“Save your sister…”

May you like

A pause.

“Or expose the truth.””
