Chapter 12: The Man in the Shadows

The message stayed on my screen.

Only one of you will leave alive.

I read it again.

Then again.

My hands went cold.

“They know where we are.””

Ethan nodded.

“They’ve always known.””

I looked around.

The hidden room.

The files.

The laptop.

Everything my mother had built to protect us.

And somehow, they had found it.

“How?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lily spoke.

“Because someone told them.””

Everyone turned.

The little girl looked terrified.

“What did you say?””

She looked at Vanessa.

“She talked to him.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Lily pointed.

“At the lady.””

My confusion grew.

“What lady?””

“The lady who gave me the necklace.””

Vanessa went pale.

“Lily…”

“No,” I said.

“Let her speak.””

The little girl hugged herself.

“She told me not to tell anyone.””

I knelt beside her.

“It’s okay.””

She looked at me.

“She said Vanessa was trying to help.””

Everyone froze.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Lily continued.

“But she said Vanessa was scared.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Scared of who?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

She didn’t have to.

A sound came from behind us.

A door opening.

Everyone turned.

Michael stepped forward.

“Who’s there?””

A figure entered the room.

Slowly.

Carefully.

My entire body froze.

Because I recognized the face.

Not from memory.

Not from photographs.

From the video.

My father.

Older.

With gray hair.

A scar across his cheek.

Alive.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then he whispered:

“Daniel.””

I couldn’t speak.

My father looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“I’m sorry it took this long.””

My legs felt weak.

“You’re alive.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because my mind couldn’t accept reality.

“I buried you.””

His face broke.

“I know.””

“You let me hate you.””

“I had no choice.””

I stepped closer.

“Everyone says that.””

My father looked at Michael.

Then Vanessa.

Then Ethan.

“I know.””

The sadness in his voice made me stop.

Because he wasn’t defending himself.

He was carrying the guilt.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because the people after us had someone inside our family.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

My father didn’t answer immediately.

Then he looked toward the doorway.

Everyone followed his eyes.

A shadow stood there.

A person listening.

A person who had followed us.

My father whispered:

“That person.””

The figure stepped into the light.

And I felt the air leave my lungs.

Because it was someone I knew.

Someone who had been beside me during the entire wedding.

Someone who had cried when my mother was mentioned.

Someone I never suspected.

My father looked at me.

“Daniel…”

His voice trembled.

“That’s the person who betrayed us.””

I stared.

Unable to believe what I was seeing.

May you like

Because the person standing there was—

Vanessa.
