Chapter 14: The Garden Beneath the House

The old Carter house looked exactly the same.

That was the strangest part.

After everything I learned, I expected it to look different.

Abandoned.

Broken.

Like the place where my childhood ended.

But the house stood quietly beneath the moonlight.

The same porch.

The same windows.

The same garden where my mother used to grow flowers.

Except now I knew it was hiding something.

My father stood beside me.

“I never came back here.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because I thought they were watching.””

Michael looked at the house.

“They probably were.””

Vanessa held Lily’s hand.

The little girl stared at the garden.

“Your mother liked this place.””

I looked at her.

“You knew her?””

Lily nodded.

“She told me stories about you.””

My chest tightened.

“What stories?””

“That you hated vegetables.””

I almost smiled.

“That sounds like her.””

For the first time in hours, something felt normal.

Then Ethan interrupted.

“We don’t have much time.””

We walked into the backyard.

The blue flowers were still there.

Exactly where I remembered.

My hands shook.

“I haven’t seen these in twenty years.””

My father watched me.

“Your mother planted them after you were born.””

I knelt down.

Under the flowers was a small metal box.

The same box from my memory.

I pulled it out.

Nobody spoke.

Inside was a key.

A photograph.

And a letter.

The photograph showed my parents.

But there was someone else.

A third person.

A man standing behind them.

I recognized him immediately.

Robert.

My father stared.

“He was there from the beginning.””

I opened the letter.

Daniel,

If you found this, it means the truth has finally reached you.

I am sorry.

I wanted to give you a normal life.

But our family was built on secrets.

The key you found opens the place where everything began.

Trust your father.

Trust Vanessa.

And most importantly…

Do not trust the person who tells you they saved you.

My hands froze.

“Saved me?””

Michael looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Before anyone could answer, headlights appeared at the end of the street.

A car stopped.

Someone stepped out.

Ethan immediately grabbed his weapon.

“Everyone down.””

A voice called out.

“Daniel!””

I recognized it.

Robert.

He walked toward us slowly.

No weapon.

No anger.

Just a strange calmness.

“You finally found it.””

My father stepped forward.

“You don’t belong here.””

Robert smiled.

“I belonged here before any of you.””

I gripped the key.

“What does it open?””

Robert looked at me.

“The place where your mother discovered everything.””

“Where?””

He smiled.

“The old company vault.””

Michael went pale.

“That was destroyed.””

“No.””

Robert shook his head.

“You destroyed the building.””

He looked at me.

“But you never found the room underneath.””

My father stepped forward.

“Why are you telling him this?””

Robert looked at him.

“Because Daniel deserves to know who really saved him.””

I narrowed my eyes.

“What are you talking about?””

Robert pointed toward the house.

“Ask your father why you survived the night your family was attacked.””

My father went silent.

A terrible feeling grew inside me.

“Dad?””

He looked away.

And that was when I knew.

There was another secret.

Another thing nobody had told me.

Robert smiled.

“Ask him what happened to your mother that night.””

The wind moved through the garden.

My father closed his eyes.

May you like

Then whispered:

“I wasn’t the only one who survived.””
