Chapter 18: The Final Choice
I couldn’t breathe.
Save my sister.
Or expose the truth.
The woman watched me carefully.
She wanted me to panic.
She wanted me to make a mistake.
But I had spent my entire life being protected by secrets.
I was done letting other people choose for me.
“Where is Emma?””
The woman smiled.
“You still think you’re in control.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I think you’re scared.””
Her smile disappeared.
Just for a second.
That was enough.
My mother noticed too.
“Daniel…”
I looked at her.
“She’s afraid.””
My mother nodded slowly.
“She should be.””
The woman’s expression hardened.
“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””
“Neither did my mother.””
I looked at Elena.
“And she survived.””
The woman’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re exactly like her.””
“Good.””
For the first time, I saw anger in her face.
Not confidence.
Anger.
My father whispered:
“That’s what she wanted.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“She wanted you emotional.””
The woman smiled again.
“Your father always was observant.””
My father stepped forward.
“You made one mistake.””
“And what is that?””
“You underestimated Daniel.””
The woman laughed.
“You think he’s different?””
She looked at me.
“He spent his entire life believing lies. He’s exactly what I created.””
My mother shook her head.
“No.””
The woman looked at her.
“No?””
My mother stepped beside me.
“You created someone who can see through them.””
Silence.
The woman’s phone buzzed.
She checked it.
Then smiled.
“Your sister is moving.””
My body went cold.
“Stop.””
She looked at me.
“Make your choice.””
I walked toward her.
“What do you want?””
“A confession.””
“From who?””
She looked at my mother.
“From Elena.””
My mother went still.
The woman continued.
“She needs to admit everything.””
My father frowned.
“Everything?””
The woman smiled.
“The truth about how this all started.””
I looked at my mother.
She already knew.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
My mother looked down.
“I made a deal.””
The words hit hard.
“With her?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“To save your father.””
Everyone went silent.
My mother continued.
“Years ago, when Thomas was captured, I had one choice.””
She looked at my father.
“I could expose the Circle immediately…”
A pause.
“Or I could negotiate.””
I swallowed.
“What did you give them?””
Her eyes filled with shame.
“Information.””
My heart sank.
“What information?””
“The location of someone.””
My father’s face changed.
“Who?””
My mother looked at him.
“Your brother.””
Michael froze.
“What?””
My mother whispered:
“The Circle wanted Michael because he knew too much.””
Michael stepped back.
“You told them where I was?””
“I thought I could control the situation.””
He laughed painfully.
“You taught me how to hide.””
A tear fell from my mother’s face.
“And I failed you.””
Nobody spoke.
The woman smiled.
“See?””
She looked at me.
“Everyone betrays everyone eventually.””
I looked around.
At my family.
At the damage caused by fear.
Then I looked at her.
“No.””
She frowned.
“No?””
I shook my head.
“You’re wrong.””
The woman tilted her head.
“Why?””
“Because everyone here made mistakes.””
I looked at my mother.
“My mother.””
My father.
“Mine.””
Michael.
“His.””
Vanessa.
“Everyone.””
I stepped forward.
“But you’re the only one who thinks mistakes give you the right to own people.””
The woman’s expression changed.
For the first time, she looked uncertain.
My phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A small voice whispered:
“Daniel?””
My heart stopped.
“Emma?””
A child started crying.
“Mom said you would come.””
I closed my eyes.
“I’m coming.””
The woman reached for the phone.
But I moved away.
And then I heard another voice.
A man.
A voice I recognized.
Robert.
“Daniel.””
I froze.
“Robert?””
His voice was weak.
“They found me.””
A pause.
“Listen carefully.””
The sound of footsteps came through the phone.
Then he whispered:
“The person you’re fighting isn’t the leader.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Robert breathed heavily.
“The Circle was never controlled by one person.””
The line crackled.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
“The founder was only the first layer.””
The call ended.
And behind me, my mother whispered:
“No…”
I turned.
Her face had gone pale.
“What?””
May you like
She stared into the darkness.
“Because I know who the real leader is.””
