Chapter 6: The Hidden File

Nobody spoke after the call ended.

The silence was unbearable.

Michael stood near the door, his face pale.

Vanessa looked between us.

Lily held onto my hand.

I wanted answers.

But suddenly, I wasn’t sure I wanted the truth.

Because every person I trusted had a secret.

And every secret led back to my mother’s disappearance.

“Michael,” I said.

He looked at me.

“Did you sign my mother’s death certificate?””

His silence lasted too long.

That was all I needed.

My voice dropped.

“Did you?””

He slowly nodded.

“Yes.””

Vanessa gasped.

I felt something inside me crack.

“You told me she died.””

“I believed she did.””

“You signed it.””

“Yes.””

“Then why are you afraid?””

Michael looked toward the hallway.

“Because I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

He rubbed his face.

“One that your mother warned me about.””

I stepped closer.

“Tell me.””

Before he could answer, the building alarm suddenly started screaming.

Everyone jumped.

Red lights flashed across the hallway.

Michael immediately moved toward the door.

“What are you doing?””

“We need to leave.””

“No.””

His eyes met mine.

“Daniel, if you stay here, you’re going to learn the truth from people who don’t care if you survive.””

The alarm continued.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Daniel, we have to go.””

I pulled away.

“No.””

Both of them looked at me.

“No more running.””

I reached into my jacket and pulled out the pendant.

“The truth is inside this.””

Michael’s expression changed.

“What?””

“My mother left something else.””

I opened the pendant again.

The photograph slid out.

Behind it was a tiny compartment I hadn’t noticed.

Inside was a small memory card.

Vanessa stared.

“She hid it.””

Michael whispered:

“She knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That someone would find the pendant.””

I grabbed my phone.

“I need to see what’s on this.””

Michael looked toward the door.

“Not here.””

“Why?””

“Because whoever came for the pendant already knows you have it.””

A loud bang echoed from the hallway.

Someone hit the door.

Once.

Twice.

Lily screamed softly.

Michael’s face turned serious.

“Hide her.””

I looked at him.

“You’re giving orders now?””

“Daniel.””

His voice broke.

For the first time, I saw my uncle differently.

Not as the powerful man everyone feared.

But as someone who had been running from something for years.

“The people who took your mother are here.””

Another bang.

The door shook.

Vanessa grabbed Lily and moved behind a cabinet.

I stood there holding the pendant.

The handle began turning.

Michael whispered:

“When that door opens, don’t trust anyone who says they’re here to help.””

The door burst open.

A man stepped inside.

Not security.

Not a guest.

A stranger wearing a black jacket.

He looked directly at me.

Then at the pendant.

“Daniel Carter.””

My heart raced.

“How do you know my name?””

He smiled.

“Because your mother told me I would meet you someday.””

Everyone froze.

The stranger reached into his pocket.

I prepared myself for the worst.

But he didn’t pull out a weapon.

He pulled out an old photograph.

And placed it on the table.

The picture showed my mother.

Alive.

Standing beside him.

And between them was a child.

A child I had never seen before.

May you like

On the back of the photograph were five words written in my mother’s handwriting.

*“Your sister is still alive.””*
