Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Door
I couldn’t move.
The person standing near the ballroom entrance disappeared behind a group of guests before I could get a clear look.
“Daniel?””
Vanessa’s voice pulled me back.
She grabbed my arm.
“Stop looking around. You’re letting this child confuse you.””
I stared at her.
“Why are you scared?””
Her expression changed instantly.
“I’m not scared.””
“You are.””
The silence between us felt heavier than the music still playing in the background.
Around us, people whispered.
Some guests looked uncomfortable. Others were filming.
My wedding had turned into a spectacle.
But I didn’t care.
I only cared about the note in my hand.
I folded it quickly and slipped it into my jacket pocket.
Vanessa noticed.
“What did it say?””
I looked at her.
“You tell me.””
Her eyebrows pulled together.
“What is that supposed to mean?””
“It means my dead mother wrote me a note six months ago.””
Her face tightened.
“That’s not possible.””
“You said that already.””
“Because it’s true.””
I studied her carefully.
Three years ago, when my mother died, Vanessa had been the person who held me together.
She sat beside me at the funeral.
She brought food to my apartment.
She told me I deserved happiness again.
I loved her because she was there when I was broken.
But suddenly, I wondered something terrifying.
Was she comforting me?
Or was she controlling what I knew?
A security guard approached.
“Sir, should we remove the child?””
“No,” I said immediately.
Vanessa turned toward me.
“Daniel.””
“No one touches her.””
The guard stepped back.
I crouched beside Lily again.
“Where did you meet the woman who gave you this?””
Lily looked nervous.
“In the park.””
“When?””
“Yesterday.””
My heart raced.
“Yesterday?””
She nodded.
“She told me to find you today.””
“Why you?””
“She said adults would lie.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“That’s enough.””
I stood up.
“No. It isn’t.””
For the first time that night, my voice sounded unfamiliar even to me.
“Who was the woman, Vanessa?””
She stared at me.
“I don’t know.””
“You didn’t even ask?””
“Daniel, this is crazy.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
Her mouth opened, but no answer came.
That was when my phone rang.
The screen showed an unknown number.
Everyone around me seemed to disappear again.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
Quiet.
Weak.
Familiar.
“Daniel?””
My entire body froze.
I knew that voice.
I knew it better than my own.
“Mom?””
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
The person on the phone started crying.
“My son…”
I gripped the phone so tightly my fingers hurt.
“This isn’t funny.””
“I know what they told you.””
My knees almost gave out.
“No.””
“I know they said I died.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked like she had seen a ghost.
“Where are you?”” I whispered.
A pause.
Then my mother said something that made the entire world tilt.
“I’ve been trying to get back to you for three years.””
My breathing became uneven.
“Mom, that’s impossible.””
“No, Daniel. What happened to me was planned.””
The ballroom lights suddenly flickered.
Everyone looked up.
Then the call cut out.
“Mom?””
Nothing.
I called back.
The number was gone.
Not disconnected.
Gone.
Like it had never existed.
Vanessa reached for my hand.
“Daniel, you need to listen to me.””
I pulled away.
“What happened three years ago?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I can explain.””
“Explain what?””
She looked around at the crowd.
Then she lowered her voice.
“Not here.””
I felt something inside me break.
“Why not here?””
Because her answer came too quickly.
“Because if they know you found the note, they’ll come for you.””
The words hung in the air.
Before I could ask another question, Lily pointed toward the entrance.
“Look.””
Everyone turned.
A man in a dark suit was walking into the ballroom.
He wasn’t a guest.
He wasn’t security.
And the moment Vanessa saw him, she stepped backward.
“Daniel,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“Who is that?””
Her lips trembled.
May you like
Then she said the one name I never expected to hear.
“That’s the man who signed your mother’s death certificate.””
