Chapter 11: The Father’s Last Secret

The hidden passage seemed endless.

Every step felt heavier.

My mother’s note was folded in my hand.

Find your father.

Those three words changed everything.

Because my father had been dead for twenty years.

At least, that was what I believed.

“Daniel.””

I looked at Ethan.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“There’s something you need to know.””

I almost laughed.

Another secret.

Another piece of my life someone kept hidden.

“Go ahead.””

Ethan looked at Michael.

“Your father might not have died when you were told.””

I stopped walking.

“What?””

Vanessa looked shocked.

Michael closed his eyes.

“I was hoping you would never find out.””

I turned slowly.

“What does that mean?””

Michael looked older than ever.

“Your father survived the attack.””

The world went silent.

“No.””

“It’s true.””

“My father is alive?””

Michael didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation hurt.

“Where is he?””

Michael looked away.

“I don’t know.””

I grabbed his jacket.

“You don’t know?””

“I helped him disappear.””

My hands dropped.

“You helped him disappear?””

“He was injured. The Circle believed he was dead.””

“And you let me believe it too?””

Michael’s voice broke.

“I was told they would kill you if they knew.””

I stepped back.

For years, I had mourned a man who might still be alive.

For years, I had hated a father who might have sacrificed everything.

“Why didn’t my mother tell me?””

Michael whispered:

“Because she was trying to find him.””

The passage opened into another room.

This one was smaller.

Inside was a single table.

On it sat an old laptop.

Ethan walked toward it.

“Your mother left this here.””

I stared at the screen.

“Does it contain answers?””

“It contains what she found.””

The laptop opened automatically.

A video file appeared.

Created twenty years ago.

The title made my heart stop.

*For Daniel. When he is ready.*

Nobody spoke.

I clicked it.

The screen flickered.

Then my father appeared.

Older than the pictures I remembered.

Tired.

But alive.

My knees almost gave out.

“Daniel.””

My father’s voice filled the room.

“If you’re watching this, something happened.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“I’m sorry.””

Tears blurred my vision.

“I wanted to be there for you.””

I touched the screen.

“But I couldn’t.””

My father looked directly into the camera.

“The people who destroyed our family are closer than you think.””

The video paused.

Then continued.

“Your uncle Michael tried to protect us.””

I looked at Michael.

He lowered his eyes.

“But he made mistakes.””

The video showed documents.

Bank transfers.

Names.

People involved.

Then one name appeared.

Robert Hayes.

My stomach twisted.

My father continued.

“Robert is not working alone.””

The screen changed.

Another name appeared.

A name I never expected.

Vanessa Reed.

I froze.

Vanessa stepped back.

“No.””

The video continued.

“Daniel, if Vanessa is still with you…”

My heart pounded.

“Do not assume she is your enemy.””

The words shocked everyone.

My father looked serious.

“She was forced into this.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying.

“You knew.””

She nodded.

“I knew my name was in the file.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t know if the information was true.””

“Then why marry me?””

Her face broke.

“Because your mother asked me to.””

I froze.

“What?””

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“She told me to stay close to you.””

The room went silent.

I felt betrayed all over again.

“Was our relationship real?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And her answer hurt more than a lie.

“Yes.””

A tear fell down her face.

“Every moment was real.””

Before I could respond, the laptop suddenly shut off.

The screen went black.

Ethan looked around.

“That shouldn’t happen.””

Then a message appeared.

Not on the laptop.

On my phone.

Unknown number.

May you like

One sentence.

*Your father is waiting for you. But only one of you will leave alive.*
