Chapter 16: The Mother Who Hid the Truth
I stared at the message until the words blurred.
*Your mother.*
My fingers went numb.
“No.””
The word came out before I even realized I had spoken.
Everyone looked at me.
My father stepped closer.
“What did she say?””
I couldn’t answer.
Not immediately.
Because saying it aloud would make it real.
Finally, I turned the phone around.
My father read the message.
His expression changed.
“No.””
Michael looked over his shoulder.
“What does it mean?””
My father shook his head.
“It’s impossible.””
Robert gave a quiet laugh.
“Is it?””
Everyone looked at him.
He stared at the phone.
“Your mother was brilliant. She knew how to hide the truth better than anyone.””
I felt anger rise inside me.
“Don’t talk like you knew her.””
Robert looked at me.
“I knew her better than you think.””
I stepped toward him.
“You helped destroy her life.””
His eyes dropped.
“Yes.””
“Then why are you still here?””
Robert looked at the ground.
“Because she asked me to be.””
The answer stopped me.
My father looked confused.
“She asked you?””
Robert nodded.
“Before she disappeared, she contacted me.””
“No,” my father said.
“Yes.””
Robert reached into his coat and pulled out an old envelope.
“She knew I had betrayed her. She knew what I had done.””
He looked at the envelope.
“But she also knew why.””
Nobody spoke.
My hands tightened.
“What did she ask you to do?””
Robert looked at me.
“Protect Daniel.””
The words felt impossible.
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
He handed me the envelope.
My mother’s handwriting was on the front.
Daniel.
I opened it slowly.
My mother’s words appeared.
My son,
If you are reading this, you have found the truth I spent years trying to hide.
But there is one truth you must understand.
I was never running from the Circle.
I was running from what I created.
I stopped.
My heart pounded.
What I created?
I continued reading.
Years ago, I discovered the Circle because I helped build the foundation that allowed them to exist.
I thought I was creating something that would protect families like ours.
Instead, I created a system that powerful people used to control others.
I lowered the letter.
Nobody spoke.
My mother wasn’t innocent.
Not completely.
My father looked devastated.
“She never told me.””
“She wanted to protect you,” Michael whispered.
I looked at him.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
I looked back at the letter.
There was more.
I knew destroying the Circle would not be enough.
They would always rebuild.
So I created something they could never control.
A person they would never suspect.
My eyes moved to the next line.
Daniel.
I hid the final evidence inside the one place nobody would search.
Inside your memories.
I swallowed.
The phrase.
The garden.
The blue flowers.
She had planned this since I was a child.
A sudden sound came from the house.
Glass breaking.
Everyone turned.
Ethan moved instantly.
“Someone’s inside.””
My father grabbed my shoulder.
“We need to leave.””
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
I folded the letter.
“I’m done running.””
The back door opened.
A shadow appeared.
A woman stepped into the garden.
Older.
Tired.
But familiar.
My breath disappeared.
Because I had seen her before.
In photographs.
In memories.
In dreams.
My mother.
Alive.
She looked at me.
And whispered:
“Daniel.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
I wanted to run to her.
I wanted to scream.
I wanted to ask why.
Why she let me suffer.
Why she let me believe she was dead.
Instead, I stood frozen.
My mother took one step closer.
“I’m sorry.””
Three years of pain.
Three years of questions.
Three years of grief.
All trapped inside those two words.
I finally found my voice.
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because if you knew I was alive…”
She looked toward the darkness behind her.
“They would have used you to find me.””
I shook my head.
“They already did.””
Her expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Daniel…”
I held up my phone.
“Who started this?””
My mother looked at the message.
Then at me.
And her face fell.
“You found that.””
“Yes.””
She closed her eyes.
“I hoped you never would.””
“Why did you say it?””
She looked at everyone around her.
Then quietly answered:
“Because the person you think betrayed you…”
She looked at my father.
“…was never the real danger.””
A pause.
May you like
Then she looked directly at me.
“The real danger is the person who taught me how to hide.””
