Chapter 9: The Family Secret

I held the documents but couldn’t open them.

Not because I didn’t want to know.

Because I already knew whatever was inside would change everything.

Families were supposed to be built on trust.

Mine was built on hidden rooms.

Locked doors.

And secrets waiting to escape.

Richard sat down heavily.

“Emma, before you read this, you need to understand something.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“I never knew.””

His voice cracked.

“I swear to you, I never knew.””

Daniel stared at his father.

“Dad, what are you talking about?””

Richard looked at him.

“Your mother’s secret.””

Daniel’s face turned pale.

“You mean the affair?””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

The word landed heavily.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“She had a child before you.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Richard opened the folder.

“There was a pregnancy before our marriage.””

I stared.

“Another child?””

Richard nodded.

“A daughter.””

Daniel stepped back.

“Why didn’t I know?””

“Because your mother gave her up.””

The room became completely silent.

I looked at the papers.

Finally, I opened them.

The first page was a birth record.

The mother’s name:

Victoria Hayes.

The child’s name:

Amelia Rose Hayes.

But the next document made my hands shake.

Because the adoption records listed the adoptive family.

My family.

I looked up slowly.

“No.””

Richard’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Emma…”

I couldn’t hear anything else.

The room blurred.

My fingers tightened around the papers.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel looked at me.

“What?””

I whispered:

“Amelia was my mother’s name.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood at the same moment.

The woman Victoria gave up decades ago…

Was my mother.

My entire life shifted.

The woman who had spent years criticizing me.

The woman who humiliated me.

The woman who hated me from the moment we met.

She wasn’t my husband’s mother.

Not only.

She was my biological grandmother.

I stood there, unable to move.

Richard spoke softly.

“Your mother never knew who her birth mother was.””

I looked at him.

“How do you know?””

“Because Victoria told me years ago.””

My voice shook.

“And you kept it from me?””

Richard looked ashamed.

“I was trying to protect everyone.””

I laughed quietly.

Another person trying to protect me.

Another person choosing lies.

Daniel looked completely broken.

“My whole life…”

He stopped.

Because he couldn’t finish the sentence.

His mother.

My grandmother.

My husband.

All connected by secrets I never asked for.

Then my phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A message from an unknown number.

But this time, I recognized the name attached.

Victoria.

The message contained a single sentence:

*“Now you know who you really are.””*

Another message appeared seconds later.

*“Come to my house alone if you want the rest of the truth.””*

I looked at Daniel.

He immediately shook his head.

“No.””

I stared at the message.

“What else could there possibly be?””

Daniel looked terrified.

And for the first time, I realized something.

He wasn’t afraid of losing me.

He was afraid of what his mother might reveal.

Because whatever Victoria had been hiding…

Was bigger than an affair.

Bigger than money.

Bigger than a ruined birthday.

I picked up my coat.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Emma, don’t go.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

His voice dropped.

“Because if she tells you the rest…”

May you like

He swallowed.

“You’ll never see me the same way again.””
