Chapter 5: The Friend Who Betrayed Me
I stared at the photo until my vision blurred.
The woman beside Daniel was wearing a black dress and smiling at the camera.
I knew that smile.
I had seen it hundreds of times.
At coffee shops.
At dinner parties.
At my wedding.
It belonged to Rachel.
My best friend.
The person who had held my hand when I cried after my father died.
The person who helped me choose my wedding dress.
The person who called me her “sister.””
I zoomed in on the picture.
Daniel’s hand was resting on Rachel’s shoulder.
Too comfortably.
Too naturally.
My first instinct was denial.
It had to be fake.
Someone edited it.
Someone was trying to destroy me.
But then I noticed the background.
A restaurant.
The same restaurant Daniel claimed he had never visited.
The same place he said he had a late business meeting.
My fingers tightened around my phone.
I called Rachel.
She answered on the third ring.
“Emma? Are you okay?””
Her voice sounded concerned.
Almost convincing.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
“What?””
“Where are you right now?””
Another pause.
“I’m home.””
I looked at the picture.
“Really?””
Her voice changed slightly.
“Emma, what’s going on?””
I sent her the photo.
The typing bubble appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally, she replied.
“Where did you get that?””
Not denial.
Not confusion.
Just fear.
I closed my eyes.
“Answer me.””
Rachel called immediately.
I almost didn’t answer.
Almost.
But I needed to hear her say it.
“Emma, please listen to me.””
“Were you with Daniel?””
Silence.
“Rachel.””
“I can explain.””
Those four words destroyed whatever hope I had left.
“You can explain?””
“Emma, it’s not what you think.””
I laughed.
I actually laughed.
Everyone who hurt me always said the same thing.
“It’s not what you think.””
“Then tell me what it is.””
She started crying.
“Daniel came to me because he was struggling.””
“Struggling?””
“He said your marriage was falling apart.””
I looked around the house.
The house I had built with him.
The house full of memories that suddenly felt fake.
“And you believed him?””
Rachel was quiet.
“He told me you didn’t love him anymore.””
My chest tightened.
“He told you that?””
“Yes.””
I sat down on the stairs.
Because somehow hearing it from her hurt more than hearing it from him.
Rachel wasn’t a stranger.
She knew me.
She knew every sacrifice I made for Daniel.
Every night I waited for him to come home.
Every time I defended him.
Every time I chose forgiveness.
“How long?”” I whispered.
“What?””
“How long have you been seeing him?””
She cried harder.
“Emma…”
“How long?””
“Three months.””
Three months.
The number felt unreal.
Three months of stolen conversations.
Three months of lies.
Three months where I probably sat beside Daniel at dinner while he texted her from another room.
I ended the call.
I didn’t scream.
I didn’t throw anything.
I simply sat there.
Because sometimes the biggest pain doesn’t come from one betrayal.
It comes from realizing the people you trusted most were betraying you together.
The next morning, I went to my attorney’s office.
I had never planned on needing one.
But apparently, my life had changed overnight.
My attorney, Melissa, listened quietly as I explained everything.
When I finished, she opened a file.
“Emma, there’s something you need to know.””
I looked up.
“What?””
She turned her laptop toward me.
“There was a reason I agreed to meet with you immediately.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Melissa clicked a folder.
Inside were documents.
Bank statements.
Property records.
Legal papers.
My name appeared on every page.
Then she said:
“Someone contacted my office three weeks ago asking about how to protect your assets during a divorce.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
Melissa hesitated.
May you like
Then she answered.
“Your husband.””
