Chapter 12: The Person Behind the Plan

I drove home with the folder sitting beside me.

I didn’t turn on the radio.

I didn’t answer calls.

I couldn’t.

My mind was too loud.

Someone inside my own family had helped Daniel.

But who?

My father was gone.

My mother was gone.

My only relatives were distant cousins I barely spoke to.

Unless…

I stopped myself.

I didn’t want to believe it.

But the truth had already taught me something.

The people closest to you were sometimes the ones holding the knife.

When I arrived home, Daniel wasn’t there.

For the first time in days, I felt relief.

I went straight to the office.

I needed evidence.

Not emotions.

Evidence.

I opened every file.

Every message.

Every document.

Then I found something hidden in one of Daniel’s old emails.

An attachment.

The sender’s name made my heart stop.

My uncle.

My mother’s brother.

The man who had raised me after my mother died.

The man who always told me:

“Family protects family.””

I opened the message.

The first line read:

*“The plan is still moving forward. Emma cannot know the connection between us.””*

I felt dizzy.

My uncle.

Daniel.

Victoria.

All connected.

I kept reading.

The messages revealed something even worse.

My uncle had known about Victoria for years.

He had known my mother was adopted.

He had known the truth.

And he had hidden it from me.

But why?

I heard the front door open.

I quickly closed the laptop.

Daniel walked in.

His face changed when he saw me.

“You found it.””

Not a question.

I stared.

“You knew about my uncle.””

He stopped.

A long silence followed.

Then he sat down.

“Yes.””

My hands clenched.

“How many people knew?””

He looked exhausted.

“Too many.””

I laughed bitterly.

“My entire life was a secret meeting I wasn’t invited to.””

“Emma.””

“No.””

I stood.

“You don’t get to say my name like you still know me.””

His face fell.

“I made terrible choices.””

“You destroyed my life.””

“I know.””

“Do you?””

I stepped closer.

“Do you know what it feels like to realize your entire marriage was built on information everyone else had?””

Daniel looked away.

Then he said something I didn’t expect.

“I was supposed to marry someone else.””

I froze.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“Before you.””

My heart slowed.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your cousin.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

“My mother wanted an alliance between the families.””

I stared at him.

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

He pulled out his phone.

Opened an old message.

Showed me.

My cousin’s name was there.

The engagement discussion.

The family arrangement.

The plan.

Everything.

“But she found out something,” Daniel continued.

“What?””

“She discovered what my mother and your uncle were planning.””

My voice dropped.

“What were they planning?””

Daniel looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw real fear in his eyes.

“They weren’t trying to take your inheritance.””

I frowned.

“Then what?””

He whispered:

“They were trying to take control of something much bigger.””

My phone suddenly rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke immediately.

“Emma, you need to leave that house.””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

The voice lowered.

“Someone who knows what Daniel did.””

My grip tightened.

“What did he do?””

The man paused.

Then said:

“He didn’t just plan to steal your money.””

May you like

Silence.

“He planned to erase your identity.””
