Chapter 8: The Trap Beneath the Smile
I drove home faster than I should have.
Not because I wanted to confront Daniel.
Because I needed to know what he had done.
The house was dark when I arrived.
For one terrifying moment, I thought he had left.
Then I saw his car outside.
He was waiting.
The living room lights were on.
Daniel sat on the couch with his hands clasped together.
Like he was preparing for a conversation.
Like this was still a normal marriage.
“You talked to Rachel.””
It wasn’t a question.
I closed the door behind me.
“Yes.””
He nodded slowly.
“What did she tell you?””
I laughed bitterly.
“You already know.””
His jaw tightened.
“Emma.””
“No.””
I walked closer.
“I want you to say it.””
He looked confused.
“Say what?””
“That you planned this.””
Silence.
The kind of silence that confirms everything.
Finally, Daniel whispered:
“It wasn’t supposed to happen this way.””
My stomach turned.
“People always say that when they get caught.””
He stood.
“I was trying to fix a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
His eyes moved away.
“Your mother-in-law’s debt.””
I frowned.
“What does that have to do with me?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he told me something I never expected.
Victoria wasn’t just having an affair.
She was drowning financially.
Years ago, she had borrowed money from dangerous private lenders.
When Richard found out, he threatened divorce.
So Victoria created a plan.
A plan involving my inheritance.
“She convinced me that if we controlled your money, we could solve everything.””
I stared.
“You.””
He nodded.
“I agreed.””
The honesty should have made me feel better.
It didn’t.
“You agreed to destroy my life.””
“I thought I could protect you.””
I shook my head.
“No. You thought you could control me.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“I loved you.””
The words sounded empty.
“Love doesn’t secretly prepare for your wife’s collapse.””
He looked devastated.
But I didn’t know if it was guilt or fear.
“What about Rachel?””
His face changed.
“I never loved her.””
I stared.
“That’s supposed to make me feel better?””
“No.””
He looked down.
“I used her.””
At least he admitted it.
But somehow that made it worse.
Because he wasn’t a confused man making mistakes.
He was someone who understood exactly what he was doing.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Melissa.
I opened it.
*“Emma, check your email immediately. We found something important.””*
I looked at Daniel.
He noticed my expression.
“What happened?””
I didn’t answer.
I went upstairs.
I opened my laptop.
Melissa had sent three attachments.
The first was a bank statement.
The second was a legal document.
The third was an email.
The sender was Daniel.
The recipient was Victoria.
The date was two years earlier.
Before the wedding.
Before the house.
Before everything.
I opened it.
The message was short.
*“Once Emma transfers the inheritance into our joint account, we’ll have full control.””*
I stopped breathing.
Two years.
He had been planning this before we even married.
The marriage wasn’t the beginning of the betrayal.
It was part of the plan.
I printed the email.
Then I walked downstairs.
Daniel looked at me.
“Emma.””
I placed the paper on the table.
His face changed instantly.
He recognized it.
“You lied about when this started.””
He said nothing.
“You told me this happened recently.””
Silence.
“You were planning this before our wedding.””
Daniel sat down.
Slowly.
“I didn’t know how far it would go.””
I stared at him.
“You knew exactly how far it would go.””
The front door suddenly opened.
We both turned.
Richard walked in.
His face was pale.
He looked older than he had that night at the restaurant.
“Emma.””
I noticed the envelope in his hand.
“What is that?””
Richard looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
“I found something in Victoria’s office.””
My heart raced.
“What?””
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a stack of documents.
Richard’s voice shook.
“These prove Victoria wasn’t just hiding an affair.””
He looked directly at Daniel.
“She was hiding another child.””
The room went silent.
Daniel stood.
“What?””
Richard looked devastated.
“The man in those photos wasn’t her first secret.””
He handed me the documents.
“And the worst part is…”
May you like
His voice broke.
“You’re connected to this.””
