Chapter 7: The Confession I Never Wanted

Rachel’s name glowed on my phone screen.

For several seconds, neither Daniel nor I moved.

The room felt frozen.

Daniel looked at the phone.

Then he looked at me.

“Don’t answer.””

His voice was quiet.

Almost desperate.

I stared at him.

“Why?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was all the proof I needed.

I answered.

“Hello?””

There was silence on the other end.

Then Rachel whispered:

“Emma.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What do you want?””

She took a shaky breath.

“I need to tell you the truth.””

I almost laughed.

The truth.

Everyone seemed to have a truth now.

Everyone except me.

“You had three months to tell me.””

“I know.””

“You had three months while I defended you.””

“I know.””

“You had three months while you were seeing my husband.””

Rachel started crying.

“Emma, I’m sorry.””

I closed my eyes.

Sorry was such a small word.

People always used it after they had already caused the damage.

“Why are you calling?””

A long pause.

“Because Daniel lied to both of us.””

I looked at him.

He looked away.

My heart started beating faster.

“What do you mean?””

Rachel’s voice dropped.

“Can we meet?””

“No.””

“Please.””

“No, Rachel.””

“I have proof.””

That stopped me.

“What proof?””

“Proof that Daniel and your mother-in-law have been planning this for a long time.””

I looked at Daniel again.

His face had changed.

He wasn’t angry anymore.

He was scared.

“Where are you?”” I asked.

“Your favorite coffee shop. The one near your office.””

I remembered the place.

The little café where Rachel and I used to spend Saturday mornings.

A place filled with memories.

Now it felt like another crime scene.

“I’ll be there in twenty minutes.””

I ended the call.

Daniel stepped toward me.

“Emma, don’t.””

I picked up my coat.

“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.””

His expression hardened.

“You think Rachel is innocent?””

“No.””

I looked directly at him.

“I think everyone deserves a chance to speak before I decide what I believe.””

The café was nearly empty when I arrived.

Rachel was sitting in the corner.

She looked different.

Not because of her appearance.

Because the confidence she always carried was gone.

She looked like someone who had finally realized she had lost everything.

When she saw me, she stood.

“Emma.””

I didn’t hug her.

I didn’t sit down immediately.

“Show me.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.””

“You’re right.””

She nodded.

Then she pulled out her phone.

“I met Daniel before he started acting distant with you.””

I sat down slowly.

“How?””

“He contacted me.””

My chest tightened.

“He contacted you?””

“Yes.””

Rachel wiped her face.

“He told me you were unhappy. He said you were thinking about leaving him.””

“That’s a lie.””

“I know that now.””

She opened a folder.

“He sent me these.””

Photos appeared on her screen.

Photos of our arguments.

Photos of me looking upset.

Pictures taken inside our home.

I stared.

“He was documenting me?””

Rachel nodded.

“He told me he needed evidence that the marriage was failing.””

My hands trembled.

“Why?””

She looked down.

“Because he wanted your family to believe you were unstable.””

The words made me feel sick.

“My family?””

Rachel nodded.

“He told me your inheritance was the only thing keeping him from losing everything.””

I sat silently.

The betrayal was too large to process.

Then Rachel showed me another file.

A recording.

Daniel’s voice filled the small café.

“I just need Emma to trust me long enough.””

My breathing stopped.

Victoria’s voice followed.

“And when she signs?””

Daniel replied:

“Then everything will be easier.””

I listened as they discussed the house.

The money.

My career.

My future.

Like I wasn’t a person.

Like I was an obstacle.

When the recording ended, Rachel looked at me.

“I was stupid.””

“Yes.””

“I thought he loved me.””

I looked away.

“And now?””

She swallowed.

“Now I know he was using me too.””

For the first time, I saw something other than anger.

I saw someone who had been manipulated.

But it didn’t erase what she did.

“What happened between you and Daniel?””

Rachel’s face fell.

“After your birthday dinner, he told me he needed time.””

“And?””

“And I realized something.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“He never talked about a future with me.””

The café was silent.

“He only talked about what he wanted to take from you.””

I looked at the recording again.

Everything was falling into place.

Daniel wasn’t choosing his mother.

He wasn’t choosing Rachel.

He wasn’t even choosing himself.

He was choosing greed.

When I stood up to leave, Rachel grabbed my hand.

“Emma.””

I looked at her.

“I know I don’t deserve anything from you.””

She swallowed.

“But please be careful.””

“Why?””

Her expression turned serious.

“Because Daniel knows you found out.””

I froze.

“What?””

Rachel looked toward the café window.

“He called me twenty minutes before you arrived.””

My heart dropped.

“What did he say?””

May you like

Rachel’s voice became barely a whisper.

“He said if you discovered the truth, he would make sure you had nothing left.””
