Chapter 6: The Plan Behind the Marriage

I stared at Melissa.

“No.””

The word came out automatically.

“No, that doesn’t make sense.””

Melissa didn’t look away.

“I wish it didn’t.””

She turned the laptop back toward her.

“Daniel started making inquiries about separating finances, transferring ownership of property, and protecting certain accounts.””

My hands went cold.

“He was planning to leave me?””

“Possibly.””

“Possibly?””

Melissa folded her hands.

“I’m telling you what the documents show. I’m not assuming his intentions.””

But I was.

Because suddenly every strange moment made sense.

The secret meetings.

The hidden folder.

The lies.

The way he defended his mother.

It wasn’t just betrayal.

It was preparation.

Daniel wasn’t caught in a difficult situation.

He was building an escape plan.

I spent the next hour going through every document.

The more I read, the worse it became.

There were discussions about selling the house.

There were questions about moving money.

There were notes about my career and income.

Like I was an opponent.

Not a wife.

Melissa noticed my expression.

“Emma, there’s something else.””

I looked up.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“I need to ask you something.””

“Ask.””

“Did Daniel ever pressure you to sign anything recently?””

I thought back.

A few months earlier, Daniel had brought me papers after dinner.

“Just routine updates,” he said.

“Nothing important.””

I remembered how tired I was that night.

How I signed without reading everything carefully.

My stomach dropped.

“Yes.””

Melissa’s expression became serious.

“What did you sign?””

“I don’t know.””

She immediately pulled up a database.

“We need to find out.””

By the afternoon, we had answers.

And I wished we didn’t.

One of the documents was related to ownership of our home.

Daniel had tried to change the agreement.

If successful, it would have reduced my claim significantly.

But there was one problem.

He needed another signature.

Mine.

The signature I apparently had not given.

Melissa looked at me.

“Emma.””

I knew what she was thinking.

Someone had tried to forge my signature.

The question was who.

I drove home that evening with one thought repeating in my head.

I needed answers.

Not revenge.

Not anger.

Answers.

When I opened the front door, Daniel was sitting in the living room.

Waiting.

He looked like he hadn’t slept.

“Where have you been?””

I put my bag down.

“Finding out who my husband really is.””

His face tightened.

“Emma—”

“No.””

I walked closer.

“You made plans to leave me.””

He froze.

“I can explain.””

I smiled sadly.

“That’s your favorite sentence.””

He stood.

“I was trying to protect us.””

“Protect us?””

I held up the documents.

“You were moving money. Changing ownership. Planning a life without me.””

Daniel’s eyes filled with frustration.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He looked toward the window.

For a moment, I thought he would finally tell me everything.

Instead, he said something that made my blood run cold.

“My mother wasn’t the one who started this.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Daniel turned back.

“She didn’t create the plan.””

“What plan?””

His voice dropped.

“The plan to take everything from you.””

The room went silent.

“Then who did?””

Daniel looked at me.

And the answer on his face scared me before the words even came.

“Someone who has been close to you for years.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Who?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID appeared.

It was a number I recognized.

May you like

A number I never expected to see.

Rachel.
