Chapter 14: The Contract Nobody Was Supposed to See
The document looked ancient.
Yellow paper.
Faded ink.
But the signatures at the bottom were clear.
Too clear.
Victoria.
Richard.
My uncle.
And Daniel’s father.
The people who had controlled my life without my permission.
I looked at my uncle.
“What did you all agree to?””
He sat silently.
Then finally spoke.
“Your grandmother’s family had assets.””
I frowned.
“Assets?””
“Property. Investments. Companies.””
I shook my head.
“My inheritance?””
“No.””
The answer surprised me.
“Then what?””
He pointed to the document.
“Your mother was the legal heir.””
I stared.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
My uncle explained that after Victoria gave Amelia up, the family never expected her to return.
But years later, my mother discovered she had a claim to a large family trust.
A trust created generations earlier.
A trust that passed through bloodline.
My mother refused to use it.
“She wanted nothing from Victoria,” my uncle said.
I looked down.
“That sounds like her.””
“She was different from us.””
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
My mother had been kind.
She had forgiven easily.
Maybe too easily.
“What does this have to do with Daniel?””
My uncle looked uncomfortable.
“Daniel’s family wanted access to the trust.””
I felt sick.
“So they married me?””
“Not just you.””
He hesitated.
“They needed you to sign certain documents.””
My hands curled into fists.
“They built an entire life around stealing from me.””
My uncle looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
I walked away.
The betrayal was endless.
Every person had a reason.
Every person had an excuse.
But nobody had considered the one person who suffered.
Me.
“Did Daniel know about the trust?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before he met you.””
I closed my eyes.
Another lie.
Another piece of the puzzle.
My uncle reached toward the documents.
“There’s one thing you need to understand.””
“What?””
“Daniel wasn’t the person who created this plan.””
I looked at him.
“Then who did?””
My uncle hesitated.
“Your grandmother.””
I froze.
“Victoria?””
“Yes.””
I stared.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does when you know the whole story.””
He explained that Victoria had spent decades trying to recover the life she lost.
When she discovered Amelia had access to the trust, she became obsessed.
She wanted the money.
She wanted control.
She wanted the daughter who rejected her to need her.
“And when my mother died?””
My uncle looked down.
“She chose you.””
I felt cold.
“Why?””
“Because you were the only person left.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So I was a replacement.””
“No.””
My uncle shook his head.
“You were her second chance.””
I looked at him.
“She treated me like garbage.””
“Yes.””
“And you still defend her?””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I’m telling you the truth.””
Before I could answer, my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Daniel.
*“I know where you are.””*
My stomach tightened.
Another message appeared.
*“Please don’t trust your uncle.””*
Then another.
*“He’s the reason your mother died.””*
I froze.
I looked at my uncle.
He saw my face.
“What happened?””
I showed him the phone.
The color drained from his face.
“Emma…”
“What does he mean?””
My uncle didn’t answer.
That was the moment I knew.
There was still one secret nobody wanted to tell me.
“What happened to my mother?””
My uncle’s eyes filled with tears.
“I tried to stop it.””
My heart pounded.
“Stop what?””
May you like
He whispered:
“The accident wasn’t an accident.””
