Chapter 3: The Secret Behind My Husband’s Smile
I stood outside the restaurant staring at my phone until the screen went dark.
The cold night air hit my face, but I barely felt it.
My husband’s secret.
Those three words repeated in my mind.
Daniel.
The man who had promised to protect me.
The man who had watched his mother humiliate me.
The man who laughed.
I told myself not to believe a random message.
Anyone could send a cruel text.
Anyone could try to destroy a marriage.
But deep down, a terrible feeling had already started growing.
Because Daniel’s reaction tonight wasn’t just uncomfortable.
It was familiar.
I had seen that look before.
The look of someone trying to control a situation before the truth came out.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
*“Check the hidden folder on the tablet in your bedroom. You’ll understand why he defended Victoria.””*
My hands went cold.
Our bedroom tablet.
Daniel’s tablet.
I had never looked through his things before.
Not because I couldn’t.
Because I trusted him.
Or at least I thought I did.
I drove home without turning on the radio.
Every memory from the past few months played differently in my head.
The late nights at work.
The sudden business trips.
The way he became irritated whenever I asked simple questions.
The way he always defended his mother.
“It’s just how she is, Emma.””
“You know she doesn’t mean anything by it.””
“She loves you in her own way.””
Maybe he wasn’t protecting his mother.
Maybe he was protecting himself.
When I arrived home, the house felt strangely unfamiliar.
The same pictures hung on the walls.
The same furniture sat in the same places.
But suddenly, it all looked like a stage set.
A beautiful home built around a lie.
I walked upstairs.
The tablet was sitting on Daniel’s desk.
I stared at it for several seconds.
Then I turned it on.
A password screen appeared.
I almost gave up.
Then I remembered something.
Daniel’s favorite phrase.
The one he used for everything.
Our wedding date.
I entered it.
The screen unlocked.
My stomach dropped.
There was a folder I had never seen before.
Hidden.
Protected.
I clicked it.
Inside were dozens of files.
Documents.
Photos.
Messages.
My breathing became shallow.
Then I saw my own name.
I opened the first document.
And my hands began to shake.
It was a conversation between Daniel and Victoria.
The date was three months earlier.
The message from Daniel read:
*“If Emma finds out, everything falls apart.””*
Victoria replied:
*“She won’t. She’s too trusting.””*
I covered my mouth.
I opened another file.
Then another.
Every one made my chest tighten.
They weren’t talking about the affair.
They were talking about me.
About my marriage.
About money.
About the house.
Daniel wasn’t just standing beside Victoria tonight.
He had been standing beside her for months.
Then I found a final file.
A video.
The thumbnail showed Daniel and Victoria sitting together at a restaurant.
I pressed play.
The video began with Victoria laughing.
“She’ll never leave you,” she said.
Daniel smiled.
“I know.””
My heart stopped.
Then Victoria asked:
“What if she finds out?””
Daniel leaned back.
“She won’t. Emma believes what she wants to believe.””
The video continued.
But I didn’t need to hear more.
I already knew.
The man I loved wasn’t trapped between his wife and his mother.
He was part of the reason I had been trapped at all.
A floorboard creaked behind me.
I froze.
Slowly, I turned around.
Daniel was standing in the doorway.
His face was pale.
He looked from me to the tablet in my hands.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he whispered:
“Emma…”
I stared at him.
“Why?””
His eyes filled with fear.
Not sadness.
Fear.
He stepped into the room and closed the door behind him.
“Let me explain.””
I held up the tablet.
“No.””
My voice was calm.
Almost too calm.
“You’ve had months to explain.””
Daniel swallowed.
Then he said the one sentence I never expected to hear from my husband.
“The birthday cake wasn’t the worst thing my mother did to you.””
I felt the blood leave my face.
Because if that was true…
May you like
Then tonight wasn’t the beginning of the betrayal.
It was only the moment I finally discovered it.
