Chapter 17: The Last Person I Suspected
I stared at Daniel’s messages.
My first instinct was to believe him.
That scared me.
After everything.
After all the lies.
A part of me still looked for the version of Daniel I had loved.
The man who made coffee every morning.
The man who held me when I cried.
The man who knew exactly how to make me laugh.
But then I remembered the documents.
The recordings.
The plans.
Love could exist beside betrayal.
That was the cruelest truth.
Richard noticed my expression.
“Is it Daniel?””
I nodded.
Victoria immediately stepped forward.
“He’s manipulating you.””
I looked at her.
“You don’t get to accuse anyone of manipulation.””
She stopped.
Because she knew I was right.
Richard sighed.
“Emma, there is something else you need to see.””
He took out a small USB drive from the folder.
“What is that?””
“Your mother’s final recording.””
My breath caught.
“My mother recorded something?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Richard looked at Victoria.
“Because she knew she was in danger.””
I took the drive.
My hands shook.
We connected it to the laptop.
A video appeared.
For several seconds, there was only darkness.
Then my mother appeared.
Older than the photographs I remembered.
But smiling.
My heart broke instantly.
“Emma.””
Hearing her voice almost destroyed me.
“If you’re watching this, something happened that I hoped would never happen.””
I covered my mouth.
The room disappeared.
It was just me and my mother.
“I don’t know who will find this.””
She looked down.
“But I need you to know something.””
She took a breath.
“You were never an accident.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“You were the best thing that ever happened to me.””
I cried silently.
My mother continued.
“I spent years searching for answers about my past. I found them.””
She paused.
“And I found people who wanted those answers buried.””
The video shook slightly.
“She warned me.””
Richard looked at me.
“Who?””
My mother answered before he could.
“Victoria.””
I looked at Victoria.
She closed her eyes.
My mother continued.
“But Victoria wasn’t the only person.””
My heart stopped.
“She told me someone else was controlling everything.””
The room became tense.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“Emma, if anything happens to me, do not trust anyone who says they are protecting you.””
A chill moved through me.
“Because protection without truth is just another form of control.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Richard whispered:
“She knew.””
I looked at him.
“She knew what?””
“That everyone around her had secrets.””
I looked at the faces in the room.
Victoria.
Richard.
My uncle.
All people who claimed they cared about me.
All people who lied.
Then the laptop chimed.
A notification appeared.
Another file had opened automatically.
A file hidden inside the USB.
The title was:
*THE ORIGINAL PLAN*
I clicked it.
The first page appeared.
And my blood turned cold.
Because the document wasn’t about my inheritance.
It wasn’t about the trust.
It wasn’t even about Victoria.
It was about Daniel.
The first line read:
*“Daniel must marry Emma before she discovers her true identity.””*
I looked at the date.
It was written five years before I met him.
Five years.
Before our first conversation.
Before our first date.
Before he ever looked into my eyes.
I turned slowly toward Richard.
“Who wrote this?””
Nobody answered.
Then Victoria whispered:
“Your uncle.””
I looked at my uncle.
His face had gone completely pale.
“You planned my marriage?””
He stepped back.
“Emma, I can explain.””
I laughed.
Everyone could explain.
Everyone always could.
But nobody ever stopped themselves.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
This time I answered immediately.
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Emma.””
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
It was my mother.
But that was impossible.
The woman whispered:
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
The room went silent.
May you like
And then she said:
“I’m alive.””
