Chapter 11: The Letter My Mother Never Read
I held the envelope carefully.
It felt impossible that something so small could carry so much pain.
A letter.
A piece of paper.
A lifetime of regret.
My mother’s name was written in Victoria’s handwriting.
I looked up.
“Why didn’t you send this?””
Victoria looked down.
“Because I was a coward.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie would have.
I opened the envelope.
The paper inside was old but carefully preserved.
My hands trembled as I began reading.
*Dear Amelia,*
I stopped.
Seeing my mother’s name written by her birth mother felt like opening a door that had been locked my entire life.
*I don’t know if you will ever forgive me. I don’t even know if I deserve the chance to ask.*
I swallowed.
The words blurred.
*I was young when I lost you. Everyone told me I was protecting you, but the truth is I was protecting myself.*
I looked at Victoria.
She was crying silently.
I continued.
*I searched for you many times. I wanted to tell you I never stopped thinking about you. I wanted you to know that giving you away was the biggest regret of my life.*
My chest tightened.
My mother had spent her life not knowing.
And Victoria had spent hers hiding.
*If you never want to see me, I understand. But I hope you know one thing: I loved you before I ever held you.*
I stopped reading.
I couldn’t continue.
The room was silent except for my breathing.
“She never received it,” I whispered.
Victoria shook her head.
“No.””
“Why keep it?””
“Because I thought one day I would have the courage.””
I folded the letter carefully.
“You waited too long.””
“Yes.””
Her answer was barely audible.
I looked at her.
“Did you ever love her?””
Victoria cried.
“Every day.””
I believed her.
That was the hardest part.
Because sometimes the truth wasn’t simple.
Sometimes people could love someone and still destroy them.
Sometimes regret came too late.
I placed the letter back into the envelope.
“Why tell me now?””
Victoria wiped her face.
“Because Daniel crossed a line.””
“What line?””
She looked at me.
“I knew he wanted money.””
I frowned.
“But?””
“But I didn’t know how far he would go.””
The room became cold again.
“What are you saying?””
Victoria took a deep breath.
“Daniel wasn’t just trying to control your inheritance.””
I waited.
“He was trying to make sure you had no reason to fight back.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
She hesitated.
Then she said:
“He knew about your mother’s medical history.””
I froze.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
“What about it?””
Victoria looked at me.
“She had a condition that could be inherited.””
I stared.
“Why would Daniel care about that?””
Victoria’s face turned pale.
“Because he wanted to use it against you.””
I felt sick.
“For what?””
“To prove you were unstable.””
The words echoed.
My career.
My finances.
My marriage.
All connected.
Daniel wasn’t just trying to leave me.
He was building a case against me.
A case that would make everyone believe I was the problem.
I stood up.
“I need to see the documents.””
Victoria nodded.
“I have copies.””
She handed me another folder.
Inside were emails.
Messages.
Notes.
I scanned the pages.
Then I saw something that made my blood run cold.
A message from Daniel.
Sent one month before our anniversary.
*“If she starts questioning things, we can use her family history. People will believe she’s emotional.””*
I covered my mouth.
Victoria watched me.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
The apology was real.
But it couldn’t undo anything.
I gathered the documents.
As I reached the door, Victoria called my name.
“Emma.””
I stopped.
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“I know I don’t deserve this.””
A pause.
“But I need you to know something.””
“What?””
Her voice shook.
“Daniel wasn’t the only person involved.””
I turned.
“What do you mean?””
Victoria looked toward the hallway.
“Someone else has been helping him.””
“Who?””
May you like
She whispered:
“Someone inside your own family.””
